The current version of the R8 is absolutely amazing, and I should know, as I’ve spent some of the more exhilerating hours of my life behind the wheel of Audi’s supercar, zipping around New Jerseys Delaware Watergap this summer.
It’s not your traditional supercar. For starters, you can see out of it, the seats don’t make you feel like your spleen is about to burst, and the clutch doesn’t require herculean amounts of strength to depress. Its engine is absolutely superb as well; a 4.2 liter V-8 capable of producing 420-bhp and accelerating you from 0-60 in the most satisfying way possible…
But the enthusiasts have been clamoring for more, and Audi has responded with the world’s first diesel-powered supercar. The new R8 “concept” boasts a turbocharged 6.0-liter V-12 diesel engine churning out 500 bhp and a neck snapping 738 lb-ft of twist.
The engine is derived from the 5.5-liter V-12 used in the Le Mans-winning R10 racer and promises 0–62-mph (0–100-km/h) acceleration of 4.2 seconds and a top speed at the more thrilling end of 187 mph.
The concept, beautifully adorned in a matte gray paint scheme, is distinguished from its production sibling by larger air intakes, flared wheel arches and additional aero modifications including a new spoiler and rocker extensions that connect the larger front and rear diffusers.
