Beefier and more complex, the 2008 Audi S5 is clearly the performance step-up from its more conservative A5 sibling. This athletic two-door coupe balances Armani good looks with under-the-hood spice. Audi remains a popular choice among drivers looking for a bracing driving experience as well as sensible good taste – slightly bold and racy, with clean lines. It is clearly crafted of high-end material, inside and out.

Performance Specs

The Audi S5 is un-shy about its under-the-hood components: this model is loaded with a spirited 354-hp (325 pounds-feet of torque), 4.2-liter, V8 engine and comes with either a six-speed manual transmission or a Tiptronic shifting system. Track tests report the S5 does 0-60 mph in just under 5 seconds and a quarter mile in a bit over 13. The six-speed option gives performance-hungry drivers all the granular dexterity they crave. But the Audi Tiptronic system, an option for newer models, now gives drivers a choice: cruise along with a smooth automatic transmission or switch on-the-fly to manual shift for a more controlled drive.

Control and performance extend as well to drive train and suspension. The Audi Quattro is a proprietary AWD performance system, originally designed to give Audi racing cars an edge. It is one of the most stick-to-the-road vehicles ever made. Take a turn in this machine and you will feel the system kick in to grab the road. The suspension is again performance-inspired: a multi-link front and state-of-the-art trapezoidal-link system in the rear - partly constructed of lightweight aluminum for control and grace - challenge even the most grueling conditions and twists of pavement. Regularly compared to the BMW 335i and Mercedes CLK 500, the Audi can be had for thousands less ($50,500 base) and has amassed a quick and impressive following.

Interior Perhaps the most exciting features of the S5 are in the cockpit. Audi is well known for its well-proportioned and tasteful design, but the S5 leaves little unused space. Front seats are ample and feature an uncommonly dynamic line. The upholstery is in silky cloth or optional top-grain leather. In the driver’s seat one cannot complain: all necessary controls are within arm’s reach. The overall look is clean and modern, with available steel and wood accents and leather package. If standard controls and equipment are not plush enough, choose from a menu of ultra-luxury options: a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, a GPS navigation system, Sirius Satellite radio, and a rear backing camera.

Need a show of performance and power? The strategically placed racing-styled S5 badge both on the exterior and interior deliver the message: “In another life, I was a German race car.”

Absolutly stunning! Beautiful car! Audi is giving BMW a run for thier money. BMW has the new 1 series, which is AWESOME, as well as the BA new M3, but the R8 and the S5 are a great new adition to the Audi lineup
