Based on a series of clandestine test runs, the Porsche Panamera has equally intriqued and agitated car watchers.

Scheduled to drive off the drawing board sometime in 2009, the Porsche Panamera has been a source of great speculation and disagreement in the automotive community. Some think the vehicle’s proposed design is too radical a departure for the automobile manufacturer while others herald it as a bold move on Porsche’s part, much like the introduction of the Cayenne.

Porsche Completes Their “Quartet” with the Panamera

On their corporate Web site, Porsche says the Panamera is the fourth member of a quartet that includes the 911, the Boxster/Cayman and the Cayenne. Porsche also promises that the Panamera will be a four-seat, four-door sports coupe. Autoblog.com reports that the Panamera will be built at the company’s plant in Leipzig, Germany.

Speculation and Questions about the Panamera

In development for years, Porsche has kept a fairly strong veil of secrecy surrounding the Panamera, but auto watchers have videotaped Porsche engineers putting the vehicle through some clandestine test runs. When talking about the Panamera, Consumer Guide says “Imagine a 911 with rear doors and a back seat.”

Edmunds.com reports that the Panamera could run on a modified version of the Cayenne’s V-8 engine. After watching a videotaped test run, Edmunds also believes the Panamera will have a low sloping roof and somewhat limited room in the rear passenger area.

On their website, Motor Trend posted some of the best shots of the Panamera, which they believe is intended to compete with the Aston Martin Rapide and the Mercedes-Benz CLS. Porsche still appears to be on track to release the 2010 Panamera sometime in calendar year 2009.
