The third and final eco-friendly Chrysler to premier at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show is the futuristic Jeep Renegade. You may have heard of the Renegade name from an older Jeep model but this baby is a whole new animal. Is it a mars rover? Maybe a new ride for Mad Max? Whatever sci-fi vehicle it reminds you of I’m placing it somewhere between a four-wheeler, a dune buggy and one of those unmanned robots that are sent in to diffuse bombs but usually end up being blown to pieces.
The Jeep Renegade use’s the standard Chrysler lithium ion battery pack that allows forty miles of cruising. However, it also comes with a small displacement BLUETEC diesel engine powering a generator that will boost that mileage up to 100mpg.
Besides the range-extended electric power-train this off-roading prodigy comes with a crowd of other cool features.
Being an all-weather vehicle with no top and only a roll bar as overhead coverage it has a completely water proof interior that can be hosed down after long days mud bogging. It also utilizes a fold-down speedster windshield and openings in the door that lower. It is made with minimal materials to help you enjoy all this Earth has to offer while at the same time protecting it. (Well, hammering through sand dunes might not be that great for desert dweller’s habitats but at least you’re not killing them with fumes…)
The independent suspension in place of rigid axels, and tons of low-speed torque will make this sub-compact renegade unstoppable. Let’s just hope Jeep makes this concept into reality so NASA, Mad Max and off-road enthusiasts can go get squirrelly on any terrain this Earth, or its surrounding planets, have to offer.
