Hot car aficionados all agree, the Lamborghini Murcielago is top of the line for both luxury and performance. This slick little coupe inherited its good looks from the legendary Lamborghini Diablo. The first Lamborghini Murcielago came off of the line in 2001, and both the coupe and the sportier roadster are still in production today. The Murcielago’s sizzlingly sleek profile was designed by the brilliant Peruvian industrial engineer Luc Donckerwolke, who was also responsible for Lamborghini’s stunning retro concept car, the Miura. The original Lamborghini Murcielago has an official top speed of 205 mph, while the subsequently produced Murcielago LP640 has an official top speed of 211 mph.

The Lamborghini Murcielago coupe originally sported a 6.2 L. version of Lamborghini’s signature V 12 engine, and is available with either a 6-speed standard or a 6-speed sequential automatic transmission and four-wheel drive, allowing for flawless handling in almost any situation. This Italian beauty is a true sports car, and details like an adjustable rear spoiler and fold-in side mirrors allow the driver to make the vehicle as aerodynamic as possible. Like the Lamborghini Murcielago needs any help. The base price for the Lamborghini Murcielago coupe is listed as $313,000, making it one of Lamborghini’s most expensive models. To add insult to injury, the Murcielago also holds the dubious distinction of being the EPA’s least fuel efficient car of 2008, getting only 8 miles per gallon in the city and 13 miles per gallon on the open road. In 2006, Lamborghini beefed up the Murcielago’s engine to 6.5 liters and renamed it the Murcielago LP640. Then in 2007, Lamborghini rolled out the more muscular Murcielago LP640 Roadster, which features an open top and a higher price tag.

Some fun trivia is that the Lamborghini Murcielago takes its name from a legendary Spanish bull. In 1879, the bull Murcielago survived an astounding 24 sword blows in an arena fight, Ultimately, the bull so impressed the crowd that its life was spared; a nearly unprecedented honor. Murcielago went on to sire a celebrated line of champion fighting bulls. Murcielago also means “bat” in Spanish.

The Lamborghini Murcielago is available in several rare, customized editions including Versace Edition Murcielago LP640. The Versace edition premiered at the 2007 Paris Motor Show and it features a customized, solid white interior and a matching white exterior. One black Versace Murcielago also came off of the line. In 2003, 50 special edition 40th Anniversary Lamborghini Murcielagos were produced, featuring a numbered plaque, unique interior trim and extra electronic amenities.
