If you love music, customizing your car’s sound system is essential. Especially if you’re rocking a high performance ride, feeling the music can make the difference between driving into the city and loving the trip. So what about sound systems for custom cars? Obviously, if you’re going for custom audio then you’re a music fan. Many people like driving but don’t really like music, which makes a custom car sound system irrelevant. If you love both, then this is definitely what you should be putting your cash into. If you love music and high performance driving, then you need an appropriate sound system for your custom car. So what are your options?

Honestly, the best way to hook up a sound system for custom cars is to find the maniacs who live and die by this stuff. Nearly ever city has one or two gearheads who are devoted to blowing their brains out with bass, and these are exactly the unstable characters who you want installing your custom car sound system. First, you’ll need a head unit. This is your basic CD/radio/MP3 unit. Today, in-line MP3 jacks are still a modern luxury, but we’d put money on them being standard equipment in the near future. One luxury custom car sound system feature that is quickly becoming obsolete is the mutli-disk changer; these 10-100+ CD carousels were often located in cars trunks, but with the advent of AV-line MP3 players they are no longer necessary. Some newer cars now come with built-in MP3 hard-drives, meaning you can upload your MP3 collection onto you custom car sound system, making it easily accessible.

After the media interface, your next concern when hooking up a sound system for your custom car would probably be the speakers. Of course, speakers are legendary with music fans. Woofers and tweeter components can make the difference between feeling the music and just humming along. You can skew your car’s audio towards bass or treble, depending on your preferences. A reliable all-around source for car audio components is the Bose company, who are famous for their high performance stereo equipment. Expect to pay top dollar, but to get what you pay for. If you’re addicted to bass, then you’ll want to pay special attention to your subwoofers. Entire subcultures have developed around “boom cars”, which are known for their pounding bass capabilities and 1,000+ watts of power. Going this direction with your custom sound system probably won’t endear you to your neighbors, but you’ll feel every note.
