The Smart Car was designed by Swatch creator Nicholas Hayek in conjunction with Volkswagen, but after some initial discrepancies about the prototypes VW pulled out and Mercedes took their place.
Debuting at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show the up! brought observes back to an age when the Beetle happily buzzed along roads across the world. A rear mounted Boxer Engine moves the up along and 21st century expectations are satisfied with 18-inch wheels mounted on silky VW rims. The up! can fit four large adults comfortably, and when not in use can be folded flat. And get this, they are air inflatable, meaning that almost any body shape from your overweight cousin to your tall and lanky uncle can be compensated.
The interior has two monitors making up unique central displays: one is an 8 inch monitor that displays the traditional gauges of a control panel; speed, gas level, range and CO2 emissions. The second is a 7 inch monitor that replace’s all the instruments of the center console, and more. It has the conventional radio volume, climate control, music selection and navigation options. But the up! adds telephone capabilities, photos, and movies.
There is no good animal or insect metaphor to describe the look of the up! It measures 135.8 inches in overall length and 64.2 inches in width. Alright, I’ve thought of one, it’s like a military torpedo disguised as a lady bug.
