Chevrolet, much like Ford and Toyota, is a company that brings along with it a strong reputation. They make vehicles to fit the needs of all price points and size requirements. They have some lower-end vehicles that make the perfect first car for any young person, but they also make many large vehicles that are often trusted with more responsibility.

One of their larger vehicles is the Chevy Tahoe. This is a full-size SUV that has been on the market since 1995. It first debuted as a rebadged version of the Chevy K5 Blazer. This ride also shared the same platform as both the GMC Yukon and the Chevy Suburban.

Though not always considered to be the best of the large SUVs available to customers, the Chevy Tahoe is one of the company’s most well-known rides due to its longevity. The 2021 model is beloved, so we wanted to see how it stacks up to its competition from companies like Toyota and Ford.

Here’s how the 2021 Chevy Tahoe compares with its rivals.

What Makes The 2021 Tahoe Great?

When it comes to comparing vehicles, a great place to begin is with the engine makeup. The 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe is powered by a 5.3-liter V8 engine. This machine has a max 355 hp at 5,600 rpm. For torque, it has 383 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm, according to Edmunds.com.

This is a pretty powerful engine, but the Chevy Tahoe is not a small vehicle. What this means is you shouldn’t expect this SUV to be as fast as some of the smaller options despite its engine setup. According to MotorTrend, it goes from 0 to 30 mph in about 2.5 seconds. This isn’t slow at all and we think people in the market for this type of SUV would be rather pleased with these speeds.

The 2021 Chevy Tahoe gets 16 mpg in the city and 20 on the highway. Given the size of this car, this is acceptable. Sure, some changes could have been made to make the fuel economy better, but it’s not the worst we’ve seen on an SUV. For full range, you get 448 miles on a single tank of gas and 560 on the highway. The tank will hold 28 gallons of fuel.

As mentioned before, the Chevy Tahoe has not always been considered the best vehicle. The 2021 version is unfortunately an example of this. According to the 2021 consumer reports, it has a score of two out of five. This is, of course, below average. What you also need to know is that this score is based on how previous models performed in the recent past.

To provide another perspective, Kelly Blue Book rated the 2021 Chevy Tahoe a three out of five. This still isn’t particularly great, especially from a company like Chevy and for a car that has been in production since the early 1990s.

The Toyota Sequoia Has A Better Reputation

VIA Toyota

The Toyota Sequoia is another larger SUV that has been around for quite a while. The 2021 version is equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine and paired with a 6-speed shiftable automatic. In terms of power, it has 381 at 5,600 rpm and a torque of 401 lb-ft at 3,600 rpm.

This means that the Toyota Sequoia wins the battle of the engines against the Tahoe. However, the fuel economy is a slightly different story. This option gets 13 mpg in the city and 17 on the highway. While this is a difference, it by no means makes the Tahoe better. This is a negligible difference in the grand scheme of things. Besides, the bigger engine used here makes it understandable why the Sequoia would use more fuel.

In terms of interior features, you get eight speakers, a 7-inch touchscreen, and HD radio. There are also 2 USB ports, which might be a tad lacking. Besides this, it has all the generally accepted features for a new car from a company like Toyota.

Another competitor to the 2021 Chevy Tahoe is the Ford Explorer. Again, this is a vehicle that has been in production for quite a while and that has a long history. It is powered by a 2.3 liter inline-4. Its transmission is a 10-speed shiftable automatic.

This ride from Ford gets 20 miles to the gallon in the city and 27 on the highway. This is better than both the Chevy Tahoe and the Toyota Sequoia. When you look at the full range for the Explorer, it gets 358 miles in the city and 483 on the highway.

The Ford Explorer also does well in towing capacity. It can tow 5,300 lbs with its base model. This makes it a great car for all sorts of activities.

There Are Many Great Large SUVs

The large SUV market has many great options for people to choose from. Sure, the Chevy Tahoe is a good SUV. However, it is inconsistent. Some years are great, but some are not. Many customers who buy the 2021 version of the Tahoe may get a great car that fits all their needs, but you could also get stuck with a defective one. Both the Toyota Sequoia and the Ford Explorer have better reputations.

Both of these competitors stick out for different reasons, but they can both be trusted. We look forward to the day when the Chevy Tahoe has consistent years of great cars, but until then, you’ll see us in the Toyota Sequoia.
