The debut of the Mercedes-AMG GT in 2014 was perceived as an answer to the famous Porsche 911. It was a dramatic front mid-engine rear-wheel-drive super-sport car made to be driven on public roads while attracting more attention than the traffic around it.

However, the Mercedes-AMG GT was only the entry-level model; its debut was followed by the release of the GT S trim which made more power and was better-equipped. It also featured several options that amplified both the performance and the driving experience.

Mercedes-AMG continued with the debut of new variants such as the GT C and the GT R, which were more performance-oriented and more exaggerated than the previous ones. In recent years, more trims have been made available, including the GT3, GT4, and GT Black Series. It should be noted, the GT3 and GT4 are race cars and don't fall under the category of super-sport streetcars.

While the GT S is not the best ride Mercedes has to offer, it's still certainly fast, aggressive, and a beast of a vehicle in comparison to its key rivals. Without further ado, let's look at the coolest feature of the GT S, that being its engine.

Under the hood, you'd find the sturdy 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged M178 V8 engine, which sends 515 hp to the rear wheels of the GT S, allowing it to go from 0 to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds. With a top speed of 193 mph, the GT S rips through the quarter-mile dragstrip in under 12 seconds.

Possibly the most exciting feature of the M178 engine is the "Hot-V" configuration which places both the turbochargers and the exhaust manifolds inside the cylinder banks in order to reduce turbo lag as much as possible; a design requiring true precision and excellence, qualities which engineers over at AMG seem to have plenty of.

The GT S features a rear-axle-mounted dual-clutch seven-speed transmission rather than a traditional front-mounted one. You have the option to either manually shift using the paddle shifter or let the car fly through the gears automatically.

The layout of the Mercedes-AMG GT being front mid-engine gives it a long hood, highlighting the saturated and aggressive physique, which is enhanced thanks to the fierce-looking headlights and front grille. The GT owes a significant amount of its powerful appearance to the exaggerated hood layout.

The overall visual construction of the Grand Tourer resembles the beloved Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. However, there are no gull-wing doors on the GT, which is arguably for the better considering they were such a unique characteristic of the SLS AMG.

The interior design features a large console in the center and a number of decorative details in carbon polymer and leather. The electronics on the dashboard, including the LCD interface and the knobs, are made with quality material and finesse, a standard commonly expected of a Mercedes-AMG.

Notably, the cabin is not exactly spacious, but it still provides both the driver and the passenger with a lot of comfort and a great ride quality.

In order to keep the weight down, 93% of the entire structure is made out of aluminum. And to control and reduce the mass ahead of the motor, the front module consists completely of magnesium, allowing for better handling and cornering.

There are many properties offered in the Mercedes-AMG GT that either utilize mind-blowing performance technology or beautiful subtleties of design. Nonetheless, we will take a look at what differentiates a GT S from an entry-level GT.

In addition to making more power, the GT S employs an electronic limited-slip differential system which is an upgrade considering the GT model had a mechanical one. It also features AMG adaptive suspension system, "Race Start" and "Race Mode" settings in the adaptive drivetrain system, and a dynamic AMG performance exhaust with different modes.

Further, the GT S is equipped with a lithium-ion battery and a set of 19-inch wheels in the front and a 20-inch set in the back, while the GT has 19-inch wheels all around.

With a surprisingly good fuel economy, this German masterpiece is an amazing car to drive, both on the road and the track. It has a theatrical presence and is entertaining and satisfying to drive, turns beautifully, and feels stiff and agile in the best way possible.

One could argue that the combination of the design and the hand-built performance parts and every other small detail put into the construction of this car gives it a soul and character. These reasons and more are why so many people are fascinated with the Mercedes-AMG GT S.
