In 2019, the Dodge Ram 1500 was all-new and redesigned, consolidating on its previous successes, such as a unique coil-spring rear suspension that provides a smooth ride without sacrificing towing or hauling capability. Perhaps the Ram 1500's greatest accomplishment is that it can be used as a blank canvas to build your truck needs around. The Ram 1500 has a wide range of capabilities, from work truck to luxury truck.

The Ram 1500 lost some weight for the 2019 model. Despite the addition of stronger steel construction to the frame, Ram claims that the truck is nearly 225 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Maximum payload and towing capacity have also been increased, and the class-exclusive air suspension has been fine-tuned for improved ride comfort, off-road capability, and load-leveling.

The Ram 1500 features eTorque, a mild hybrid engine assist technology. Notably, eTorque is not a hybrid technology in the traditional sense of a gas-electric car, but it does store electricity in a lithium battery and aids in the smooth operation of the automatic engine stop-start system. In short bursts, it also adds a little extra power. The Ram's previously available 3.0-liter diesel V6 is no longer offered, but it may return in subsequent models.

The truck's standard 3.6-liter V-6 engine comes with Ram's new eTorque mild-hybrid powertrain technology. You'll pay $1,395 for the extra two cylinders and another $1,250 for eTorque, if you want the 5.7-liter "Hemi" V-8 with eTorque. Also, eTorque aims to improve gas mileage by increasing torque at the truck's crankshaft for improved performance and by allowing the automatic engine start/stop system to operate in engine-off mode for a longer period of time. The 48-volt electrical system is powered by a lithium-ion battery mounted behind the back seat, which is recharged through regeneration as the truck coasts and brakes.

The eTorque system is noticeable but not intrusive when in use. You can hear and feel the engine restarting, and there is a brief delay before the truck responds to your right foot. However, it is not a source of annoyance. Besides, the V-8 sounds fantastic from both inside and outside the truck, and the Ram 1500 Hemi is downright quick, so any eTorque sins are easily forgiven.

The standard transmission is an 8-speed automatic with a rotary shifter knob on the dashboard. I like this design, though I understand it isn't for everyone. The test vehicle also featured an anti-spin rear differential and a 4-wheel-drive (4WD) system with 2-wheel drive, 4WD Auto, 4-Hi, and 4-Lo settings. When set to 4WD Auto, the Ram experienced very little wheel-spin on wet pavement and soaked dirt, giddying up and getting going quickly.

The maximum towing capacity of a properly equipped 2019 Ram 1500 is 12,750 lbs., while the maximum payload rating is 2,300 lbs. When comparing the standard 5.7-liter V-8 to one with eTorque, the EPA expects a +2-mpg improvement in city and combined driving, as well as a +1-mpg improvement on the highway. The eTorque gets 17-mpg in the city, 19-mpg combined, and 22-mpg on the highway. The truck returned 17.9-mpg during our testing with Auto 4WD engaged. That's less than the EPA estimate, but it's 2.5 miles per gallon more than a recent GMC Sierra Denali returned from its 6.2-liter V-8.

Ram smacked the design ball out of the park with his styling. The new Ram 1500 looks fantastic, from the improved grille designs to the "frenched" dual exhaust outlets. However, keep in mind that most paint colors are optional extras. The Sport Appearance package included the "sport performance hood" on the test truck. It appears cluttered, and if you don't like it, you can remove it using the delete option. In addition, while the back bumper lacks corner steps like the Chevy and GMC, Ram offers deployable bed steps at each bumper corner as an option.

The interior of the 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab is a very pleasant place to spend time. It's attractively and intelligently designed, simple to enter and exit, and simple to see out of. Above all, it's very spacious, particularly in the back seat, which has class-leading legroom. The Ram has large door openings, and the extra rear legroom provides plenty of foot clearance as you enter the backseat. Each of the four doors has its own chunky, well-placed grab handle. Inside and outside door release handles are easy to grasp. You'll have to take a small step to get in, but no more than in any other truck.

The Ram offers new technology on the inside, including an optional infotainment system with a massive 12-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and multiple USB ports. The steering wheel on the 2019 Ram 1500 is telescoping. There's also a lot of tilt-and-telescoping adjustment range. The seating position provides a commanding view of the road while keeping the pedals and controls easily accessible. Higher trims include adjustable pedals. In all seating positions, there is plenty of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room.
