For taking to the trails or being ready for anything on back roads, 2020's most high-profile off-roaders are here.

The 2020 Jeep Wrangler is the latest iteration of the classic, while the 4Runner may look like a common SUV on the outside, but is built for climbing in and out of canyons as much as it is for picking up the kids. Which one fits your lifestyle?

By The Numbers

The 4Runner offers a maximum of 270 horsepower, seating for five, a 4.0L V6 engine, and a towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Edmunds rated it 7.6 out of ten.

Edmunds and Car and Driver both noted that the 4Runner sometimes feels like an odd mix of sedate SUV and off road beast. It can be clumsy on the road, until you get into the mud. Then, off-road-ready crawl control and a totally different sense of balance shine. The 4Runner's interior is made with long trips in mind, with USB ports to charge devices in the back seats.

As for the Jeep Wrangler, you'll get a max of 285 horsepower, four seats, a V6 engine, and 2,000 lbs of towing capacity. Edmunds awarded this one 7.8 out of 10.

The Wrangler's solid front axle means it also drives like it isn't meant for the highway, but once you get into the wilds, that muscular build turns it into a capable climber. Jeep versatility is fully on display here, with removable doors and roof for open-air adventuring. The Wrangler comes in two or four-door options, with the latter more suited to long family trips, but the former paring the Jeep down to make a more compact off-road machine.

Adventurous families.

While the 4Runner sometimes turns into a 'jack of all trades and master of none,' the size and relatively comfortable interior could make it a haven for long trips featuring lots of mountaineering. Climb rocks and then retreat into comfort for a while, plus comfortably carry all your gear. Car and Driver says their reviewers fit 14 pieces of luggage behind the second-row seats. Beware that those same reviewers have said this can be ergonomically awkward.

Off-the-beaten path lifestyles. Daily life sometimes involves a lot of dirt roads. In rough winter climates, farm life, or country roads, you need a vehicle that won't balk at less-than-smooth conditions. If you're looking for the convenience of a day-to-day SUV with the muscle of an off-roader, this might be the way to go. The greater towing capacity for the Jeep makes it a better fit for people planning to haul trailers or work equipment.

Diesel junkies.

For the first time, the Wrangler will be available with a turbo diesel engine option in 2020, according to Auto Trader. That pushes the Jeep to 442 lb-ft of torque, and offers an interesting option in terms of mileage and performance. For now, though, this version will be limited only to a 4-door automatic kit. Rumors swirled in 2019 that Toyota might offer a diesel 4Runner, but they proved untrue, according to a report from Jalopnik.

Jeep fans. You know who you are. The bare-bones shape of these reliable off-roaders is a lifestyle in itself. You want to trek through the great outdoors, never have to worry about being unable to ford a muddy spot, and have the reassurance your vehicle will take whatever the world throws at it and keep going. No need to fix what isn't broken.
