This year's Ferrari Finali Mondiali event in Mugello was more than just a wrap-up of the 2021 Corse Clienti racing season. It was something a bit more special, as the Italian marque has unveiled the Daytona SP3. It's their newest flagship ultra-limited edition supercar, joining the Monza SP1 and SP2, which were launched back in 2018.

We've been following the development of the LaFerrari's successor ever since test mules started doing laps around Fiorano, but now it's finally here. Ferrari says the Daytona SP3 is aimed solely "at the marque's top clients and collectors", meaning this is something you couldn't easily buy right off the showroom floor, even if you have the money for it. With that being said, it's still an exciting new car from Maranello, and we can't wait to tell you more about the things we just learned about the Ferrari Daytona SP3.

10 The "Daytona" Nameplate

As mentioned, the newest ultra-limited supercar from Ferrari is called the Daytona. For those who didn't know, it's not the first time that a car from Maranello has been called by that name. It is, however, the first one to officially have the Daytona nameplate, as the one from 1968 was officially designated the Ferrari 365 GTB/4.

The first 365 GTB/4 Daytona was a front-engined Grand Tourer which set the Italian marque on a new design path and set forth the platform that modern-day Ferrari GTs like the F12 Berlinetta and the 812 Superfast follows.

9 A Tribute To 60s Ferrari Prototypes

Chief Design Officer Flavio Manzoni says the Ferrari Daytona SP3 "is a futuristic interpretation of a classic sports prototipo that showcases what the team at Ferrari Centro Stile can do". So instead of making another V12 Grand Tourer, the new Daytona SP3 was designed as a tribute to the 60s Ferrari prototypes that went head-to-head against the legendary Ford GT40.

We all know how Ford took that monumental win on European soil, but Enzo Ferrari actually retaliated a year later by taking a 1-2-3 victory on American territory. In the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona, a Ferrari 330 P3, P4, and a 412P took the checkered flag side-by-side, in the same fashion as what the three Ford GT40s did previously at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans.

8 Design

Even though the Ferrari Daytona SP3 was made to look like a racer from times gone by, it also borrowed some styling cues from past Ferrari road cars, combined with their current design philosophy.

That design direction was most prominent at the rear of the car, which was composed of a series of horizontal blades that look like they were borrowed from the Testarossa playbook. There's also a horizontal light bar that sits just below the spoiler to complete the futuristic look. The tailpipes make sure they get the proper attention, as they're positioned through the upper part of the diffuser.

7 Advanced Chassis Technology

The Ferrari Daytona SP3's chassis and bodyshell were made from 100% carbon fiber composites, which, of course, were derived from their Formula 1 program and aeronautics, enabling the car to tip the scales at just 3,275 lbs.

But it's not just about achieving minimum weight either, as according to Top Gear, the material the Daytona SP3's chassis was made of, is strong enough to make centrifuges for enriching plutonium in the nuclear industry.

6 Passive Aerodynamics

There's no fancy aerodynamic trickery such as movable wings and air brakes with the Ferrari Daytona SP3. Instead, the guys from Maranello used passive aerodynamics to achieve positive downforce and efficient cooling of its V12 powerplant.

Ferrari carefully optimized the underbody ducting to create ground effect and stick the Daytona SP3 to the ground. Up top, they designed the car's flanks to direct air to the side channels and bring in lots of fresh air to the radiators, while the engine cover was designed to quickly dissipate engine heat.

5 Interior

Inside, the Daytona SP3 shares the same digital dashboard and user interface with the SF90 Stradale, and has such a driver-focused interior, much like how a racecar should be.

Ferrari chose to integrate the Daytona SP3's seats into the chassis similar to the LaFerrari, and the way the fabric for both sides connect in the central tunnel is a nod to the past. Furthermore, driving position adjustment is done by a movable pedal box and steering column.

4 Powertrain

In a supercar world that's dominated by hybrid and electric technology, the Ferrari Daytona SP3 also pays tribute to the past by having an unassisted, naturally aspirated 6.5-liter V12 engine that revs up to 9,500 rpm.

It has Ferrari's most powerful road car combustion engine with 829 hp, some 10 hp more than the 812 Competizione which has the same engine. Furthermore, the 6.5-liter V12 is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox that drives the rear wheels.

3 Performance Figures

Ferrari claims the Daytona SP3 could accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in just 2.8 seconds, reach 124 mph in 7.4 seconds, and achieve a top speed in excess of 211 mph.

These figures are indeed slower than what the LaFerrari did before. However, let's not forget that the LaFerrari had hybrid KERS assistance while the Daytona SP3 achieved those numbers with just pure, old-fashioned V12 power.

We've mentioned earlier that the Daytona SP3 is only reserved for the long-time clients and friends of the Ferrari brand. Aside from that, the car is also preferred to be sold to the people who have already bought the Monza SP1 and SP2.
