Elon Musk's scheme to take the automotive industry by storm has become a fairly hilarious roller-coaster ride, as he seems deadset on matching each piece of positive news surrounding Tesla with a Tweet that boggles the minds of investors the world over. But no matter how anyone thinks of the man himself, there's no arguing that Tesla's cars aren't seriously impressive performance machines, capable of taking on legit supercars in acceleration testing thanks to the instantaneously available torque made possible by electric motors.

But even Ludicrous Mode or Cheetah Stance have nothing on a new world-record-holder, the EV known as "Current Technology" that just logged a quarter-mile trap speed over 200 miles per hour.

Truly Shocking

The video clip above includes the record-setting quarter-mile sprint, which elapsed in only 7.520 seconds. That time, however, doesn't best the previous record, which was held by racing legend Don Garlits and an EV that ran at the Palm Beach International Raceway with a time of only 7.235 seconds—but Garlits only hit 189.04 miles per hour, while the newly crowned king, Steve Huff, hit 201.07 at the top end.

Probably the coolest thing about the run, other than the ridiculous speed and acceleration that are borderline incomprehensible, is the sound. Somewhere between the Tumbler from the Dark Knight films and a Prius in a Whole Foods Parking lot, it takes Huff's car a few tire rotations to truly get going. Clearly, with the weight of batteries and gearing taken into consideration, Huff had to make concessions between jumping off the line or topping out at the upper limit.

Huff claims the car puts out 1,950 horsepower and 1,000 lb-ft of torque with a brushless AC motor and an 800V electrical system, though perhaps he could take the world record down a few notches if he followed Elon's path and set up an all-wheel-drive system to improve early traction.
