In every state, there are different laws that govern exactly what you can put on your custom vanity license plate. Some states require front plates while all states require one on the back of the car. What you can say with those 7 characters isn't totally wide open either.

Often times the law is written in a way that's intentionally open-ended. That gives the state the ability to determine what they personally find unacceptable without writing themselves into a corner so to speak. With that in mind, some drivers have gotten very creative.

Today we look at 15 drivers who spelled out exactly what they thought or even utilized clever tricks to send a message the DMV didn't realize was there. Some are a bit off-color so reader beware.

15 Dog Lover

You, and me too, buddy. It seems like this would inherently be offensive to some but for whatever reason Kentucky seemed to miss this meaning or just not care. Dogs are so much fun compared to most people, aren't they? They just love you and want love in return. People can be far more ruff.

14 Honest

In a world full of materialism isn't it refreshing that somebody is just totally legit about how they got the big shiny thing they have? Recently I found that most cars like this that aren't bought outright end up requiring a monthly payment of some $3000 or more. Think about that.

13 Unsure

I don't totally hate the latest T-Bird. It's like Ford decided that Chrysler owning the title for "Most underperforming sports car" thanks to the Prowler was just too special for them, and so they stole it back with this. If this is success, I don't want any part of it.

12 Accurate

If only they could've mounted the plate above the Cube logo. It seems they're all about putting things in order that aren't, to begin with though. I suppose this isn't all this shocking but imagine the guy who made this plate wondering what the heck the driver was thinking.

11 Inspirational

What a great way to inspire others everywhere you go in your $300,000 car. Often times we think of Ferrari drivers as jerks but this proves that judging a book by its cover is utter rubbish. Just because someone has something that's nicer doesn't mean they're a bad person.

10 Foretelling The Future

The Gallardo is perhaps one of the pillars of the Lamborghini brand. It brought a sense of stability to the company after decades of trading hands from one company to the next. This owner seems to understand that his car may end up trading hands a few times too. It's exceptionally healthy to understand your boundaries.

9 Advantages

This one is a bit frisky if you get my drift. I can't speak for the person who approved this plate but I get the feeling they've never seen Austin Powers or know much of British culture. Perhaps it's just a tamer kind of cat than I realize. Get it? Tamer. It's a Jaguar.

8 Get It?

When you own a FR-S I'm not sure you can stand out too much but adding this little bit of comedic flair doesn't hurt. Does this person actually date moms? Anything is possible but it seems more likely that he's in his early twenties and has been dating his baby momma since they were pregnant at 16.

7 Owning It

I appreciate that this person probably meant that they're a "Wild Chick". What shocks me though is that they clearly didn't realize that chic is a word all on its own which means stylishly fashionable. I'm not sure "Wildly Fashionable" or "Wildly Elegant" makes sense as a statement. Does it? Tell me in the comments!

6 They Allowed It

This seems a bit uncalled-for. Not being one for toilet humor I struggled with including this one but let's be clear, the owner of this Tesla isn't wrong most of the time he's in traffic. It becomes all the more offensive when he's ahead of one of his own kind though.

I totally love utilizing the style of the plate to add to the message. It's also adorable that they make use of it in such a whimsical way. The joke and the punchline are right there for you to spot and it just takes the right thought to get you there.

4 Call The FBI

Though it may not seem like a real plate, or that the driver has altered this plate, I can tell you that it is indeed real. Which brings me to the next point, someone needs to call the authorities because it seems this is a clear cry for help.

3 Let's Be Real

If this is what a ruined Z car looks like I gotta say I think they need to ruin a few more cars. The stance is brilliant, the wheels are nicely fitted and the paint and body look immaculate. Sure it's no GT-R but it's a fine looking GT.

2 Those Who Know

Via funnylicenseplates.wordpress.com

Very few cars on this list can do what the C63 AMG can. It looks boring to those who don't know what they're looking at. Under the hood though lies a nearly 500 horsepower monster that has no regard for the health and wellness of the rear tires. A Geek, sure.

I do appreciate how simple this plate is. However, I do think the University of Connecticut could've done better. After all, their state is spelled weird and so why not put something homier into the plate. Or even something like "HonDont" or "Acrdict" for Accordcict. Be more inventive U of C.
