Gone are the days when electric vehicles were a figment of the imagination or abstract sketches on the drawing board. Today, it is actually not hard to spot an electric vehicle on public roads. An ever-increasing number of carmakers are gradually making the foray into this growing market – pointing to a very intriguing future ahead on the automobile landscape.

Some of these car makers, like Tesla, already have considerable experience on the EV scene while others are new players who are banking on their innovative product offerings to open up the market for them.

Over the last few years, there have been a raft of electric vehicle debuts at auto shows and other media events. The initial delivery timeline for these vehicles are now closer than ever. It is worth mentioning that some of the dates may have been impacted by recent world events but most of these models will eventually make their way to mainstream production.

15 Rivian R1T – Expected In 2021

This is the brainchild of a little-known American company. The Rivian R1T will be offered as an all-electric pickup with a range exceeding 400 miles. All-wheel drive is standard on the R1T, with each axle powered by its own electric motor. The claimed range will prove to be a huge selling point and they are sure to be taken seriously if they can deliver on all their promises for the car.

14 Ariel P40 - Expected In 2020

Ariel has created some pretty exciting cars in the past like the Atom and the Nomad. Their next creation, the P40, is no exception and we are prepared to be blown away. The car boasts nearly 1,200 hp from four 295-hp electric motors. Unlike the previous creations from Ariel, the P40 will seat 4 people and the family can enjoy this nifty looking ride for a school run or a quick trip to the mall.

13 BMW i7 – Expected In 2022

The German carmaker entered the EV market with the I8 and recent reports suggest that they are in it for good with a planned raft of upcoming electric models. Prominent among the expected new releases will be the BMW I7. Recent reports suggest that the i7 will be available in 2 different versions; with each able to deliver considerable power and class-leading technology.

12 Drako GTE Sedan – Expected In 2020

This sedan is being developed by a California-based company and it plans to build just 25 units. Be prepared to part with about $1.3 million if you want one. The Drako will have a top speed in excess of 200 mph. A 90kWh battery pack feeds a bank of four electric motors that can generate up to 1,200 hp – pretty impressive for a four-seater sedan.

11 Tesla Cybertruck – Expected In 2021

Well, the Cybertruck's divisive looks seem to have won the car a lot of fans. In November 2019, Elon Musk stated that his company has received over 250,000 pre-orders for the alien-looking EV. We hope people won’t be trying out the ‘Smashgate’ theory on the windows once deliveries begin.

10 Polestar 2 – Expected In 2020

The Polestar 2 is the first EV from the company and is expected to rival the Tesla Model 3 in terms of range and ride comfort. Power is supplied by a water-cooled 78kWh battery setup that will help propel the car from 0-60 mph in less than 5 seconds.

9 Rimac C_Two – Expected In 2020

The Rimac C_Two is almost here and we are excited for the Croatian company that’s pushing the boundaries of hypercar performance with their product – and they are doing this without a combustion engine. The C_Two will crack 60 mph in 1.85 seconds and total range is in excess of 400 miles. It will be hard for any other hypercar to match that combination.

8 Volkswagen ID4 – Expected In 2020

The concept ID4 model first debuted in 2017 when it was introduced as Volkswagen’s first foray into the electric crossover market. Then the car was oddly named ‘Crozz’ – thankfully, that name has been changed and the Volkswagen ID4 looks set for the market. The car will have a range of up to 310 miles on a single charge, depending on the drive package.

7 Ford Mustang Mach – E, Expected Date, 2020

The American carmaker is now looking away from beefy octane powerplants under the hood and the upcoming Mustang Mach-E represents a new direction for the company. The Mustang Mach-E’s body design takes inspiration from the traditional Mustang pony car but will be fully electric. Two battery sizes will be offered and its range is expected to be in the 300-mile region.

6 Tesla Roadster – Expected In 2021

The Roadster features a proper supercar design – a refreshing change from the usual bland offerings from the company. It’s pretty fast too; able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 2 seconds. 5 BMW i4 - Expected In 2021

BMW has had some valuable experience when it comes to EVs and we are sure loads of lessons learned have been incorporated into the low-slung i4. The car will be powered by a hefty 530-hp electric motor and an 80kWh battery pack. BMW claims that it will have a driving range of about 373 miles, making it well-positioned to compete with the likes of the Tesla Roadster.

4 Mercedes Benz EQS – Expected In 2021

The EQS will seat alongside the existing S-Class series as the ultimate Mercedes sedan. The car will have a brand-new chassis and will be powered by two combined motors. It should be able to hit 60mph less than 5 seconds after launch. The best way to imagine an EQS right now is to picture the traditional S-Class levels of luxury and comfort – without noise.

3 Aspark Owl – Expected In 2020

The Aspark Owl is not your ordinary hypercar. It is all-electric but still boasts an incredible 1,985 hp and will accelerate to 60mph in a scarcely believable 1.69 seconds. The Japanese hypercar made its debut at the 2019 Dubai International Motor Show. Only 50 units of the car will eventually be built and each is expected to cost almost $3 million.

2 Pininfarina Battista - Expected In 2020

Here’s another all-electric hypercar that can call up almost 2,000 hp from its electric set-up. The Italian car made its debut at the 2019 Geneva Auto show and is able to drive 280 miles on a single charge. It will also rocket to 60 mph in less than 2 seconds if the company’s claim is to be believed. Pininfarina has planned a production run of 150 vehicles; each one will cost almost $2.5 million.

1 Lotus Evija - Expected In 2021

Lotus announced its first foray into the hypercar world with this mind-boggling electric hypercar. The name ‘Evija’ means ‘first in existence’ and the car is aptly named indeed. The car is 4-wheel drive and has about 1,700 NM of torque – that’s more than double the power of the McLaren Senna. The car has a clever aerodynamic design which helps keep the car planted on tarmac on the way to its 200 mph+ top speed.
