Sometimes we can find a heck of a lot more in the backyard than an old buried chest.  Believe it or not, some people have found some pretty incredible items, but for us here at HotCars, perhaps the most intriguing thing you could possibly find buried under the dirt would be old cars.

As it turns out, many have found cars buried in the recesses of their yards, deep beneath where their children play tag and their dogs play catch can sometimes lie the oldest and rarest of cars.

But, why would someone go ahead and bury two tons of metal underground, especially if it's a valuable classic or a functional vehicle? Well, as it turns out, there are more than a few reasons...and some are truly bizarre! So, join us as we take a look at the most insane photos of buried cars we stumbled upon online.

13 Buried Alive In A G-Wagon

Well, it was actually supposed to serve as a bunker. These days, the apocalypse, in the sense that Hollywood has been selling for years, is rather a predominant fear among many, especially considering the obvious state of the world. Also pictured is a sketch of his plans for the bunker. Yikes!

12 "Honey... Quick! Get The Camera!"

via Fox News

Get the camera indeed! This gentleman had quite the discovery just a mere foot below the surface of his yard. We wonder only how many times he mowed that lawn, never knowing what was buried just less than a yard away from where he probably walked thousands of times over!

11  Miss Belvedere

via AMSOIL Blog

According to motorbuscuit.com, this 1957 classic Plymouth was buried with a full tank of gas as part of a contest where contestants had to guess what the population of Tusla Oklahoma would be in 2007. The car was to be dug out in 2007, and the person with the closest estimation would win the car!

Apparently the car was in good working order when it was interred, but because of how long it spent underground and due to the underground water, it was completely consumed by rust.

10 Lost In The Weeds

via Colossal

If we take a deeper look at these buried vehicles, we can notice that quite a bit of work was put into them. We mean, somebody had to get that grass to grow over the cars so neatly, didn't they? You might even call this blending of technology and nature art.

9  An Send-Off In A BMW

via Sunday Times Driving

In Nigeria, apparently, a man interred his father in a BMW SUV as opposed to a coffin! Pretty crazy-sounding, right? Well, apparently, the man wanted to bury his father right and in style, and we guess he figured that was the best way to do this. There was some confusion after an image went viral on social media - the image was actually from a film shot in the country, but apparently this crazy story is true.

8 What A Tragic End For A 1974 Ferrari Dino

via Vintage News Daily

Now talk about an image out of a film! If this were a shot from a film, we have no doubt it would star the likes of the epic Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Al Pacino, and of course Harvey Keitel. But mob movies aside, what a terrible end for a Ferrari Dino. Good thing it was found. We wonder only if it was restored after its discovery.

7 Can You Call It Art?

via Grist

We'd have to say yes, it can indeed be called art. As we stated earlier, someone had to take the time to strategically plant these vehicles into the earth as if they were flowers or plants. And as we can see in this image, the cars are then painted and vegetation is strategically planted within the vehicle. The end result: the image you see above.

6 Cars Found In A Cave!

via Daily Mail

Now, this picture just looks like an image out of some adventure movie, doesn't it? It sure does to us. But just imagine the group of people that found these cars in this cave! They must have been pretty shocked to find all those cars clustered beneath a rock, a hard place, and quite a wee bit of water! As it turns out, this was in Wales, and hundreds of cars were actually found, according to the Daily Mail.

5 Merely A Mirage

via Smithsonian Magazine

We'd say that quite a bit more work was put into this display of buried cars. The paint jobs themselves are rather intricate and they call to mind previous eras and generations, specifically the hippie generation.

Psychedelic-colored cars half-buried into the desert sand! Play a little Jefferson Airplane in the background, and you've got yourselves a trip down memory lane.

4 Perhaps Low Tide Would Have Been Better?

via WGNO.com

We couldn't avoid at least a few images that were not planned. As we have seen thus far, some of these vehicles were purposefully implanted into the dirt or sand, but a few accidents surely go a long way in accomplishing that exact same thing. Take this Dodge that just so happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time.

3 Lost Among The Trees

via DriveMag

Here at HotCars, we've often done features on abandoned cars, and those cars are often abandoned in the woods located around many towns in North America. But this one here certainly goes a little beyond that, as this car actually had a forest grow around it instead of it simply being buried beneath the earth.

2  Only The Best For This Billionaire's Bentley

via Sunday Times Driving

Social media is definitely a place to find some pretty incredible things, and this story is no less crazy than what you've probably already seen in recent years. In Brazil, a millionaire known as Count Scarpa (he even looks a little like the count on Sesame Street, but whatever), decided to bury his Bentley and in a rather ceremonious style. And yes, he posted the whole service...even an image of him getting all teary-eyed.

1 A Classic Underground

via FivePrime

And who said that cars had to be buried beneath the dirt and sand? As it turns out, so many vehicles have been found in old tunnels or even mines all over North America and even the rest of the world. Sometimes, these vehicles are also found in old barns that have seen better days, as you all well know. We've also covered quite a few barn finds over the years.

And yes, it looks just as beautiful and as picturesque as it does in the above image. They really went all out, and like the other images we featured, this garden also features an array of beautifully painted planted, or rather buried cars, as can be seen at the bottom right.

 A Final Request Granted

[caption id="attachment_334338" align="alignnone" width="948"] via Der Spiegel[/caption] Some people really love their cars, and we really get that. This man, also from Africa, asked to be interred in his absolutely favorite car and when his time came, his wish was granted. He was a prestigious member of the United Democratic Movement. The car in question was again a Mercedes.
