January 12th, 2015 was a day that Ferrari wishes never happened. Despite being the king of the mountain in the most basic of circles, it's widely accepted by real petrolheads that Ferrari has somewhat lost its way.
While it has maintained a vast array of fast and fancy vehicles, it has at times watered down the brand. Today when you see a Ferrari speed past you in the other direction on the motorway, you know it's a Ferrari. What you likely don't know is which Ferrari it was, thanks to one after another after another of similar-looking designs and low production special editions.
The date mentioned at the beginning was the day that Ford shocked the automotive world and revealed the latest version of their famed GT supercar. Since then it has been a real thorn in the side of Ferarri, who can no longer boast the way it once did. Let's have a look at 15 reasons we'd proudly purchase the Detroit special over any of that Modena mess.
15 Price
It should be noted off the top that you can, in fact, buy a Ferrari for less than a Ford GT. Think about which Ferrari that is though. The low price option is the $290,000 F8 and it only saves you about 150k on a brand new Ford GT. As we move on down the list you'll see how that extra 150k pays for itself.
14 Top Speed
We won't always use the F8 as the major comparison but to begin with, however, Ford bests it at top speed by 5 mph. 216mph in the blue oval badged car vs 211 in the prancing horse. 5 mph may not seem like much but it also gets there quicker. So from the moment you go, the Ferrari will be watching you drive away faster and faster.
13 Ease Of Use
Look at that stunning, elegant and simplistic interior. We love this about the GT. Not only can a tall guy like me fit in here, everything is so easy to understand and use. It's laid out well and even uses regular old Ford Sync so the learning curve is a cinch.
Get in this thing and it's just a comfortable place to be. Ferrari has a history of overly complicated and complex systems. Sometimes they add buttons with no function... not so with the Ford.
12 History
Ford Vs Ferrari came to theaters this year and helped remind the world what a rich pedigree Ford really has in the racing world. Most people didn't realize that it made its name stomping Ferrari into the ground at the 1966 Le Mans. Don't you want to be in a car with that kind of history? We do.
11 The Headlamps
They look like they were stolen out of Area 51 during one of those not so secret raids earlier this year. What a bonkers looking thing, and so so much more special than anything Ferrari has to offer.
10 Maintenance
See that? That's the key to the Ford GT. It's exactly the same as the one in your pocket to your Ford F150, or Flex, or anything else Ford. While it's unlikely most GT owners will do their own work, all of us like saving some money and at the end of the day the GT is, at its heart, just a Ford. Maintaining it costs a fraction of any Ferrari made today or in the past.
9 Handling
The GT also sets lap records wherever it goes. Take just this example for instance. In January of 2018, it set a new lap record at Virginia International Raceway with the guys over at Car and Driver. One track, and one lap... who cares right? Wrong. This track has seen every major Ferrari and none has overcome the GT.
8 Beauty
Just look at it. What a piece of artwork. We've already touched on the interiors simple elegance and the amazing headlights. From the hollow flying buttresses to the amazing hollowed out taillights this thing is pure feral attraction from every angle.
7 Innovation
When it debuted it got a ton of flack for not carrying on with a big burly V8 that the previous generations had. Honestly, it's better without it. Do you really think they'd release a halo car knowing that another motor would've been better suited in it?
Certainly, they realized that they could have all the power of a V8 without the weight penalty and we're glad they did.
6 Rarity
We mentioned at the outset that Ferraris can be non-descript. Hard to determine which version you're seeing. Not so with the GT. The production is very limited and when you see one, there is no doubt what you're looking at. That little plate on the right side of the dash there designates the year and which build number each GT actually is.
5 Flexibility
One of our favorite parts of the GT is how flexible this thing is compared to any Ferrari. Yes, it can set lap records and go 216 mph but how is it getting to the racetrack? Turns out pretty good.
While nobody will call its ride quality soft and luxurious, it does have multiple modes that allow for more than expected comfort around town. In addition, should you be caught in the rain or worse, it has modes for that too to keep you on the road safely.
4 Depreciation
Here's where that extra $150000 really comes into its own. Go find a Ferrari from say 4 years ago. Here's one with less than 5000 miles on it. It's dropped in value over $10000 in just 4 years. Meanwhile, Ford GTs actually appreciate in value.
Most are worth roughly double what the original owner paid for them today. This one argument makes the GT a winner here. Hey Ferrari, don't run away, we're not done with you yet.
3 Visibility
Have you ever sat in a modern Ferrari? I have, and unless it's a convertible you can forget about seeing anything on your passenger side or behind you. It's a complete mess. The Ford though isn't that way, it's got plenty of visibility, even out the back.
2 It's Still Quirky
We all want our cars to feel a little quirky and special and despite the ease of use or the simplicity of the interior, the GT still manages to be kinda quirky. Take for example the turn signals: Press just a smidge and you get the three-click variety. Press a little harder, nope, harder than that, whoops too hard... and they'll stay on like conventional signals. Click them one more time to cancel them.
1 The Sound
Everyone thought that it wasn't possible to make this car sound this good and boy were they wrong. Ferraris do sound good but this car is different. It is straight-up one of a kind sound.
Do you know the boxer rumble Subaru owners talk about? Ford has created a unique sound all on its own for the GT. It's loud and raucous and surrounds you like a warm blanket when you're in the cabin - just inches from it as it hurls you forward, away from that slow Ferrari behind you that sounds like every other Ferrari ever.
