In the US, car ownership is linked to status. Even when the main car makers were Chrysler and Ford, they were producing different classes of vehicles, including unique, expensive cars. Americans' fascination with this industry continues to grow. The difference is that we demand even more from vehicles than in the past. Cars should be safe, fun to drive and fuel-efficient.
