Regulations and road-rules are instrumental in keeping the streets safe, however annoying they may be to us car enthusiasts. Occasionally, though, a clever set of individuals find a way to subvert these rules; creating modified vehicles that really shouldn't be street-legal, but are nonetheless.

Whether they're lawyers with a deep knowledge of U.S. law or simple car-loving tuners, these enthusiasts have managed to get some interesting vehicles on the road. A few are shockingly fast, while others appear to have broken all the rules. So, without further ado, here are fifteen instances of the strangest, modified, street-legal cars...

15 ‘Donk’ Dodge Challenger

Via: Pinterest

If you've never seen a 'donk car' before, then consider yourself lucky. These things are not a pretty sight to the majority of sane motorists, especially when it's done to a revered sports car like the Challenger pictured above. Heck, there's more rim than tire on these things; supported by seemingly flimsy lift kit. To each is their own, I guess.

14 Neon Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Via: Pinterest

Take a look at this flamboyant machine! That is, if you can fully look at it without going blind. All jokes aside, this Lamborghini Aventador Roadster is certainly "extra." The bright neon lights make this eye-catching Lamborghini into an even more grand display. What's puzzling us, though, is how so many extra lights isn't illegal on public roads (after all, it's very distracting). Yet, it looks like the Japanese authorities have no problems with it.

13 Monster Chevrolet Camaro

Via: Motor1

Before us is what thousands of muscle car enthusiast view as a blasphemous thing: lifting a classic Chevrolet Camaro. Regardless of the taboo, this Camaro driver went through with his dream of a Camaro monster truck. We're not sure how practical this upgrade is, but who are we to say 'no' to another persons wants? You'll see another off-roader like this when we discuss a later entry.

Ever wanted to take a fully-fledged race car onto the wide open roads? Well, at least one Lamborghini enthusiast felt that way, as evidenced by this absolutely ridiculous street-legal Huracan Super Trofeo EVO (yeah, it's a mouthful). All you need to do is make the necessary changes to fit the road rules, and you're good to go! That is, if you aren't looking for a comfortable ride.

11 Bosozoku Black Gold

Via: Our Auto Expert

Similarly to how societal culture changes from country to country, so too does the respective car cultures (for the most part). Japan is, perhaps, the most extreme example of this; showcased in just how crazy some of their cars are. For instance, "bosozoku" cars like the one shown here. This one's named "Black Gold" and is shockingly legal.

10 30-Degree Cambered Tuners

Via: Sxdrv

After the Fast and Furious's trend of cheap, plastic body-kits fell out of favor, another too kits place. Of course, that would be tuners with a ridiculous amount of camber; typically 30-degrees or more. Not only does it degrade your tires and hinder traction/handling, but it also just looks awful (in our opinion). For some reason, though, 30°+ camber isn't illegal, yet, certain exhausts are...

9 Betsafe Formula 1 Car

Via: Moto Networks

Of all the sports in the entire world, Formula One is (easily) one of the most expensive and technologically advanced of the bunch. The cars themselves usually cost over $15 million to make alone, so the idea of making your own for personal use is out of the question. However, when you scale back the costs, go for cheaper options, and abide by road-rules, you get what Betsafe made for the Gumball 3000 rally: a law-abiding Formula One race car.

8 Jet-Powered Volkswagen Beetle

Via: Pinterest

Of all things there is to do to a New Beetle (i.e. rims, suspension, exhaust, etc.) you probably didn't think about adding a jet-engine. Suffice it to say, this Beetle owner thought of this mind-bottling build. Surprisingly, it actually runs pretty well and is a well-known 'meme' on several V.W. forums. Maybe he'll make another jet-powered car soon!

7 Jon Olsson’s Rebellion R2K

Via: Top Speed

Jon Olsson, an active member in the Gumball 3000 rally & professional skier, has some great taste in cars, particularly his custom-built Rebellion R2K. Originally, the R2K was an Ultima GTR stripped down to the frame, then built back up as an LMP-car lookalike. Olsson owned the car for a couple years, taking it on the 2013 and 2014 Gumball 3000.

Olsson also has a lot of connections with Betsafe, too. Hence the litany of Betsafe stickers and advertisements all over his car. If we're not mistake, they play a big part in his professional skiing career, as well.

6 Modified Gambler Sprint Car

Via: GM Authority

Back in the golden-age of racing, Sprint Car racing was very different than it is today, both in terms of rules and appearance. The old sprint cars seem to imitate low-tier formula cars, like those in Formula Lite and so on. Although they may be small, a set of headlights, brake lights, indicators, and a license plate will make it as road legal as any other car. Plus, you get to drive a real race car around wherever you please.

5 V8 Volkswagen ‘Volksrod’

Via: WorthPoint

For the polar opposite of the jet-powered Beetle, we have the Volkswagen V8; also known as "Volksrod." The name pretty much says it all: the idea is to turn a classic V.W. Bug into a hot rod looking cruiser. While the jet-powered Beetle's exterior is stock (besides the engine protruding out), the Volksrod is almost a redesigned car, turning it into an almost unrecognizable speedster.

4 Mazda Miata Off-Roader

Via: YouTube

This one's fairly straight-forward. What we have here is a Mazda Miata NA that's been converted to an off-road monster. Believe it or not, because of their accessibility, affordability, and uniqueness, these kits are quite popular amongst the Miata community. Still, that doesn't make it any less 'out of the ordinary' when you see it on the highway.

3 The BatVan

Via: HotCars

"Nana, nana, nana, nana, BatVan!" Wait, that's not right! Well, normally it wouldn't be, but it is in this scenario. Allow us to introduce you to Batman's greatest (unofficial) vehicle, the "BatVan." Even with the abhorrent colors, huge body, and protruding body parts, you can still take it on a cross-country drive. That is, if you'd ever want to...

2 The Spirit Of LeMons

Via: WSJ

Using the classic "Spirit of Flight" motto, this resourceful budget racer decided to make his own take on the well-known plane. Yet, rather than make an actual flying machine, he turned a car into a plane look-alike. It's not the most aerodynamic of race cars, but when you're competing in the 24 Hours of Lemon (under $500 budget for each car), the "Spirit of LeMons" is a perfect car to bring along.

1 Upside Down Camaro

Via: Motor1

No, you're not losing your mind! That is, in fact, a Chevrolet Camaro flipped on its head. We can only speculate the kind of mind that would invent such a vehicle, yet, it is hilarious to see in motion. Although the exterior is upside down, the driver is still very much upright. Most importantly, though, it's D.O.T. approved!
