Many people may not be aware of the fact that it was the pint-sized Isetta that saved BMW from near bankruptcy back in the mid-50s. At the time, it played a pivotal role in turning the fortunes of BMW around and perhaps is the reason why the luxury car brand is still around.

If you are a true BMW fan, this tiny car needs your attention. This 1958 BMW Isetta 300 is currently up for grabs on Bring A Trailer and could be your perfect if a slightly eccentric project.

The bubble-shaped Isetta is just 7.5 feet long and 4.5 feet wide so driving it around the city is fun. And at the time, did not raise any eyebrows. It can easily house two people and you don’t have to worry about parking, either.

This oddball sports a 298-cc 4-stroke single-cylinder engine churning out only 13 horsepower and 13.6 lb-ft of torque but it returns incredible fuel economy with over 70 MPG. For a car that’s unladen weight is only about 780 pounds these figures are spectacular.

This particular example is in blue and white and was in storage since the ‘70s before the current owner bought it.

This tiny car has already done 49,000 miles but can go on if given some TLC. The seller lists out all the services under the current ownership, which include cleaning the carburetor and fuel tank, replacing the engine mounts, fuel tap, front brake lines, and the battery. The owner also had the brake master cylinder and front brake cylinders rebuilt. This car comes with the manufacturer’s literature, spare parts, two keys, and a clean California title in the seller’s name. It is worth noting that the car’s registration states it’s Planned Non-operation in the state of California.

The owner admits to a little rust, but nothing car killing. He also admits that he liked the Isetta because he was a Vespa fan, and the tiny motor is what attracted him in the first place.

The car has seen some action, as there is fading on the bench seat while the side panels have color fade and cracks as well.

The current bid stands at $2,800 and there are still 7 days left for the winning bid.
