It was sometime in the 1970s that Car Craft magazine coined the term, street freak. This moniker applied to modified street cars that looked like they belonged more on a drag strip than on Woodward Avenue. A prime example of a street freak is this 1967 Monaco from the Dodge division of Chrysler that is currently available for sale on Craigslist.

The Turbulent History Of The Dodge Monaco

Dodge first produced a series of cars with the Monaco moniker from 1965 to 1978. As the flagship model the Dodge brand, the Monaco came in several configurations including a two-door coupe, four-door sedan, two-door convertible, and a station wagon.

The first three generations of the Monaco were full-sized cars, and built on Chrysler's C platform. In 1977, Dodge introduced a new down-sized Monaco built on the smaller B platform. The Monaco name then went on hiatus in 1979 when Dodge introduced an all-new model named the St. Regis.

The Monaco nameplate returned during the 1990 model year. Dodge bestowed the Monaco appellation to a new full-size sedan that sat atop of their lineup. But the newest iteration of the Monaco came to an end when the new Intrepid sedan replaced it in 1993.
