The car chase scene in the 1968 American action-thriller film Bullitt is considered one of the best and most exciting in cinematic history. Lt. Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) and his trusty 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastback were definitely the stars of that scene. Equally deserving of attention is the Dodge Charger R/T that was chasing the Mustang. Now, it looks like one of the Chargers used in the film is  up for sale. Let’s take a glimpse.

Two Chargers For The Shoot

The film actually used two 1968 Ford Mustang GT fastbacks and two 1968 Dodge Charger R/T models. These were bought by Bill Hickman -- a veteran stuntman who drove the Charger -- from Glendale Dodge in Southern California. While the engines of these Chargers were left as they were, their suspensions were upgraded to cope with the chase stunts.

In the film, we all saw a black Charger chasing the highland green Mustang. However, these weren’t the original colors of the Charger as Dodge cars weren't offered in black in 1968, according to Auto Evolution. Purchased were blue and yellow Chargers, and were painted black. The blue-turned-black was used for the "battle" scenes while the yellow-turned-black one was employed for the in-cabin shots.

After the film’s production was wrapped up, the yellow-turned-black Charger was returned to Glendale Dodge and was repainted to its original yellow finish. It was sold and resold, until it was acquired by Arnold Welch in 2002. While restoring the Charger, Welch discovered the different layers of paint sprayed over the car, as well as camera mount holes on the dashboard.

This Dodge Charger was once featured in Mopar Collector's Guide (February 2009 issue) and even went to the 2011 SEMA Show. In 2015, Chrome Cars -- a German company who offers movie car originals and replicas – acquired this Charger. Interestingly, this Charger took part in recreating the iconic Bullitt car chase scene during the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2018.

Is This The Real One?

There are some doubts whether this 1968 Dodge Charger R/T is really one of the two original cars used in Bullitt. It has undergone restoration and the records that could’ve helped in verifying the car’s authenticity are nowhere to be found. Nonetheless, the clues mentioned above may suffice in establishing its true identity. By the way, it's up for grabs!
