The Ford Mustang is one of the most recognized and iconic muscle cars in automotive history, with a legacy that stands firmly upon a pedestal of driver-engaging performance and a design that's handsomely timeless.

More than 50 fruitful years have gone by since the release of the original Mustang in 1964, and since then, several exceptional versions have emerged from Fords´s factories to please buyers all around the globe.

In 1969, when competition was as fierce as ever between Ford and Chevrolet as both companies sought to dominate the American muscle market, Ford came up with a Mustang variant that far surpassed its predecessor, which would also serve as a cornerstone for the future of the Mustang brand: the 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1. Let's take a look at its coolest feature.

Beyond measurable doubt, we think it's safe to say that the coolest thing about the 69’ Mustang Mach 1 is its exterior body styling. Ford really hit the mark with the Mach 1’s design in every single aspect, which was quite the accomplishment back in the day, considering that they were a company that focused more on utility and driveability instead of sheer good looks.

In the front, the Mustang Mach 1 comes with a quad-light setup that fits the car’s design perfectly without overdoing it. The outer lights sink into the body seamlessly, while the inner ones fit inside the grill. There’s also a chrome insert that pushes out the entire front end of the vehicle, giving it more depth and aggressiveness. Below that, a unique downwards-facing splitter sprouts out towards the ground, finished in matte black and flanked by mini canards that really bring the car’s face together. Even the hood offers plenty of design elements, with several bodylines that vary in sharpness and depth, and a functional scoop that sends air to the carburetor.

Looking at it from the side, the Mustang Mach 1 keeps up the daring details with subtle yet noticeable flared fenders, and my personal favorite design cue of the entire body: side vents that sit right by the door and above the rear fender. They give the car a mean and powerful profile without making it seem like they were put there just for the heck of it, in fact, they look like they were always meant to be there.

Final Thoughts On The 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Last but not even close to least, there’s the Mach 1’s iconic fastback rear end. In terms of lighting, the rear end one-ups the front with six rectangular lights split into three to each side; it's the polar opposite of the circular headlights, but somehow the look still ties together. These rear lights are a mustang trademark, and similar designs can still be found in today’s Mustangs.

Above them, there’s a medium-sized wing finished in the same matte black as the front splitter, which completely balances the entire vehicle when looked at from front to end. Finally, there’s the view of the hunched rear fenders that sink into the sloping roof, which gives the entire back end a layered feel.

Long story short, the 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 ticks all the boxes when it comes to looks, and even though it may not hold the same standard in terms of performance, the 335-hp V8 under its hood is certainly no slouch, and the sound it makes can provoke just as much emotion as straight-line speed and gravity-defying turns.
