The Plymouth Road Runner was a no-nonsense muscle car simply because of its utter focus on performance. Its interior isn't really stripped, but it features nothing fancy. These are just some of the reasons why enthusiasts love this classic car. Even to today, the so-called budget muscle car remains popular, with some versions hard to come by. Here's one such example of one: a 1969 Hemi Road Runner Hardtop with a 426-ci V8 engine under its hood.
Rare Find: 1969 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Hardtop
This 1969 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Hardtop is indeed a rare find. Part of the Route 66 Car Collection, this classic muscle car is one of the 234 Hemi Road Runner Hardtops that were produced in 1969 with an A-833 Hemi four-speed transmission. This gearbox is mated to 426-ci V8 mill that is engineered to deliver up to 425 hp of pure car muscle.
Nonetheless, this Hemi Road Runner Hardtop is also rare simply because it's the only one—as listed in the Chrysler Registry (with letter of verification)—to be optioned in Code 99 special order Omaha Orange finish with black vinyl top.
Even when it underwent a meticulous restoration, this Hemi Road Runner Hardtop retained its ultra-rare finish, which is complemented by tinted glass, pin stripes, an Air Grabber hood with Performance hood treatment, original fender tag, as well as a special light package.
Restored Like New By Julius Steuer
The listing on Mecum Auctions (for the Glendale sale event on March 18-20, 2021) didn't mention when this 1969 Plymouth Hemi Road Runner Hardtop was restored to its pristine condition. However, it did reveal that it was restored by Julius Steuer. The restoration might have been recent since the classic muscle car only logged 200 miles on its odometer.
Inside, this muscle car features a black split bench seat interior. Featuring power steering with 4.10 Dana rear axle, this Hemi Road Runner Hardtop comes with a Beep Beep horn, Hurst shifter, as well as a Solid State AM radio. It rides on Color-matched steel wheels (with bright hubcaps) shod with Redline tires.
Includes Auto World American Muscle Die Cast Model
Interestingly, this particular car was employed as the model for the Auto World American Muscle 1:18 die cast scale model that celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Road Runner (1968-2018). One of the 1,000 die cast models is included in this package.
