In 1984, when the Mustang found itself in the third generation of many more to come, Ford decided to put out a limited and unusually different variant: the SVO.

It was truly quite the mashup when compared to other Mustangs, both of the time and those that came before it. In terms of design, it looked nothing like the muscular and robust design that the Mustang had become known for, instead featuring a more laid back look, with a pointy front end and a hunched, almost hatchback-like rear.

The differences didn't just stop on the outside, however, as the SVO dropped the usual Mustang V8 and replaced it with a 2.4 liter turbo-charged four-cylinder paired to a five-speed manual transmission, capable of making 175-hp and 210 lb-ft of torque.

Those were great numbers considering the engine’s small size, in fact, they allowed the SVO’s to hold their own against other Mustangs and even outperform them in certain areas.

Nearly 40 years have gone by since the Ford Mustang SVO’s release, and during its two-year production run, less than 10,000 examples were fabricated. With that in mind, let’s take a look at what the Ford Mustang SVO costs today.

As with most used cars, especially older ones, prices are heavily determined by the mileage and overall condition of each unit. Mustang SVO’s prices fluctuate a lot, and today’s average price sits somewhere around $14,000 for well-kept examples. For instance, you could get your hands on one with 42,000 original miles for $12,500; this particular unit is fully functional and in great overall condition, albeit with many replaced parts that drop the vehicle's price since it cannot be considered as OEM.

Further up the price ladder, you can find SVO’s listed for over $30,000. At almost three times the price of the previously mentioned SVO, this one only has 18,000 miles clocked on the odometer, and all parts are original from the manufacturer and in great condition. Furthermore, the vehicle comes equipped with the highest grade options offered by Ford back in the day.
