Chevrolet shocked the world of automotive performance when it unveiled its biggest and most powerful create engine so far. This left several gearheads thinking how they could put one of its best crate engines into application. Thinking ahead, Chevrolet Performance showed them one way by partnering with Hoonigan to create the new ZZ632-powered 1988 Camaro Sport Concept.

1988 Camaro Z28 Equipped With ZZ632 Crate Engine

Hoonigan actually teased the build with YouTube video uploads showing the project and how they are tackling it. Tasked with building a new show car for the 2021 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, the crew received a third-generation 1988 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 to tinker with. Interestingly, Chevy had used this Camaro as a development car since the early 1990s.

When it arrived at Hoonigan’s garage, the Camaro Z28 already had a big block mill as its core. But since bigger is better, Hoonigan was to take out the previous monster to replace it with a more powerful naturally aspirated monstrosity – the ZZ632 crate engine with 1,004 hp of max output and 876 lb-ft of peak torque. Chevrolet’s build brief for Hoonigan was to highlight the new crate engine, and Ken Block’s crew worked hard to make that happen in just three weeks.

A Three-Week Camaro Project For Hoonigan

Transforming the Camaro Z28 into the Camaro Sport Concept was not an easy task for Hoonigan. The crew had to make a lot of cuts to pull out the old engine and then prepare the engine bay for the installation of the new ZZ632 crate engine. While waiting for the crate engine to arrive, Hoonigan stripped the Camaro down for further modifications.

When the ZZ632 engine finally showed at Hoonigan’s garage, the crew cannot contain their excitement – after all, they just might be the first to shoehorn Chevrolet’s most powerful crate engine. The crew had the whole process planned out, thanks to their expertise and experience in creating some of the weirdest yet amazing vehicles on earth. After weeks of extensive modification work, the 1988 Camaro Sport Concept came to life.

The 1988 Camaro Sport Concept was one of Chevrolet Performance’s centerpieces at the 2021 SEMA Show. Wrapped in red finish with a Hoonigan-Chevrolet livery, the hood-less Camaro Sport Concept proudly displays the ZZ632 crate engine as intended. The 1988 Camaro Sport Concept also makes use of a number of Chevrolet Performance parts and accessories while sporting a new rear end and wide fenders.
