In the world of SUVs there's no model with as storied a past as the SJ-series Jeep Grand Wagoneer. With its simulated wood paneling, boxy body, and off-road prowess, the Grand Wagoneer set the standard for luxury SUVs and has achieved a loyal cult following since production ceased in 1991. When surviving examples such as this one come up for auction, they command a premium. And this one is sure to go for a bundle as it's very special - and HELLISH! - indeed. How's a 707 hp Dodge Hellcat motor under the hood for you?!

Rather than go the usual route and do a frame-off restoration, the owner decided to keep the body and interior intact as it is in excellent original condition. It's only been driven 52,000 miles since new and has 500 miles since it received some upgrades.

And the upgrades are quite extensive. The Wagoneer came stock with a 5.9 liter V-8 pumping out a measly 144 hp. To handle the additional power of the gargantuan 707 hp Hellcat engine virtually every drivetrain component and underhood system had to be replaced. The exhaust manifolds, for instance, are from the new Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk edition installed by the Black Mountain Conversions custom car shop.

The transmission is a robust three-speed automatic unit with part-time four-wheel drive and low speed gearing. She sports four-wheel semi-elliptical leaf springs, upgraded front and rear axles, and vented disc brakes all-around with vacuum assist.

On the outside, she's finished in a highly desirable Bright Red paint with wood paneling and all the accents and features that came standard on the top of the line Grand Wagoneer model. Inside the leather seats and cloth interior cleaned up quite well for a 30 year old car. All around you can tell she's been well cared for with a patina that should bring top dollar when the hammer falls at the auction house. Indeed, these "survivors," as they are known, sometimes go for more than fully restored models.
