If there's one thing that pretty much everyone is expected to do at this point, it's to learn how to drive. I know a guy who's cool in pretty much every way; he's smart, funny, and a good-looking guy. But he never got his license, and all of a sudden, you start wondering, "What's wrong with that guy? Why wouldn't he get his license?" It isn't like it's so hard to do or anything. It isn't quite as confusing when you're dealing with someone who's rich and famous; they can afford to have people driving around and maybe even like to feel important, but still, most if not all of the celebrities on this list are more than a bit surprising.
Some never got their licenses in the first place, and others had it then just stopped driving for some reason. These aren't people who had their licenses taken away because of legal problems; these are people who just plain old don't drive. Maybe these people should get it together a little bit? Personally, I think so. Who cares if you're a super big star if you can't even drive to the store late at night when you have the munchies for some Doritos?
Here are 20 Celebrities That Don't Know How to Drive.
Then, there are other people like Ed Sheeran who claim that the reason that they haven't learned to drive is that they just haven't gotten around to it. I have to say that I call total B.S. on that. So he's telling us that he's gotten around to being a famous star and doing all the things that he had to do to achieve that but that he just never got around to learning how to drive? Come on, Ed... why don't you head on down to your local DMV and do whatever you need to do to get yourself on the road? At least you can drive yourself around then, and also, you won't have to worry about being in articles like this one.
Christina Aguilera isn't all that surprising as far as someone who doesn't know how to drive goes. In fact, somehow, I can't picture her driving all that well. She did get her license when she was 21 but doesn't drive anymore and relies on a driver to get her around. Explaining why, she says, “I am terrified of driving in L.A., with paparazzi, running them over—you hear stories.” Alright, well I guess I can kind of get that when it comes to going to a red-carpet event, but worrying about running over the paparazzi when you want to run to Starbucks for a coffee? I don't know... I'm not buying it, but when you're as rich as she is, you do what you want.
When you're as good looking as Bella Thorne, people probably want to drive you places a lot of the time. But in Bella's case, it's her mom who drives her around a lot. She's said that she's totally afraid to drive and doesn't plan on learning. Now Bella is still pretty young, so who knows? Maybe she'll change things up at some point and wind up getting her license. It's doubtful that her mom will keep driving her around when Bella's into her late 20s and 30s, but who knows? Stranger things have happened—although I imagine that the men in Bella's life in the future probably wouldn't mind taking a turn driving her.
If there's one person for whom it might not be all that surprising that she doesn't drive, it would probably be Mariah Carey, basically because she really doesn't come across as all that smart. She failed her driver's test a total of three times, which would probably be really surprising—if she wasn't Mariah Carey. To be honest, it would be pretty surprising to me if Mariah ever passed any sort of test at all. Don't get me wrong—she's obviously pretty talented, but there are some people who just don't do all that well when it comes to written testing, and she certainly seems like she's one of them.
Kate is certainly good at being gorgeous, but apparently, she failed her driver's test and then decided to give up driving for good' which might mean that her teenage daughter will get a license before she does. That isn't the most embarrassing thing in the world, especially when you're a really gorgeous and well-known celebrity, but come on, Kate... if you fail your driver's test, then you just have to get back on the horse and try again. We aren't talking about rocket science here; all you have to do is drive a car. There are all sorts of people out there doing it. Get back on the horse, so to speak.
Ricky Gervais doesn't have a license, and he doesn't have any plans to get one. Apparently, he's more than happy with having a personal driver. I don't know... I guess it would be cool to be rich enough to not have to worry about driving yourself around, but still, wouldn't you get sick of never being alone? Hanging out in your car by yourself driving around is when I get a lot of my best thinking done. Why would I want some dude around me all the time? Sometimes, celebrities just don't seem to get things we normal people get really easily. Ricky, you're pretty funny, but honestly, driving isn't all that hard.
Tina Fey is a bit of a surprise to me. She seems like someone who'd be able to drive, considering she's so smart and funny. But that's just it—she does know how to drive and even had her own license for a while, but then it expired and doesn't have any plans to renew it. I mean, come on... why not? Does it really hurt to have something in your possession that allows you to drive in case of an emergency? I wouldn't think so. Tina, I know something in your mind must think you don't need a license anymore, but someday, you might. So come on... go down to the DMV and hook it up.
Some people are probably just too grumpy to learn how to drive. Once, a reporter asked Noel Gallagher to describe his band Oasis in one word, and he responded "Me." Back in the day, he and his brother Liam were both well known as musicians. You probably remember the band for the song "Wonderwall," but they also are really well known for fighting on stage all of the time and acting like clowns. So, is it any wonder that Noel never learned how to drive? He was too busy writing lyrics and being too cool to spend any time practicing for a driver's test. To each his own, I suppose. Gallagher did own 5 cars at one point even though he didn't drive.
Perrie Edwards is known for a lot of things. She's one of the members of the English Girl band Little Mix, and she also has gone out with Zayn Malik, but one thing she's not known for is being able to drive a car. Interestingly enough, Zayn also can't drive, so they must've spent a lot of time waiting for Ubers while they were hanging out together. What does it take to make someone actually not get his or her driver's license? Come on... you must want to go somewhere every once in a great while, and when you do, don't you want to drive yourself there? I know that I do. But then again, I'm not famous.
Back in the day, Barbara Streisand was considered one of the biggest stars in the world. Why she was considered that it is kind of hard to tell. Her scene just doesn't translate all that well over generations. What makes her story even odder is the fact that she used to know how to drive, but since she hasn't done so since the '80s, she's completely forgotten how to. This makes almost no sense at all, of course. How could you learn how to drive and then totally forget? I guess that makes just as much sense as being a famous star when you're Barbara Streisand. How did that happen again? Makes no sense.
Some people that can't drive are just eccentrics, and they do things differently than others, or maybe they might even be considered some of the smartest people who ever lived. Take Albert Einstein, for example. He's widely considered to be so smart that his name is actually used as an adjective for being smart, yet he didn't know how to drive and got around by riding a bicycle. So, how smart was he really? Of course, a lot of smart people don't have a whole lot of common sense when it comes right down to it, and I'd say that Albert Einstein might be one of those people that I'm talking about.
A lot of people in the United States aren't up on how big a star Robbie Williams is in England and around the world, but let's be clear about something—the guy is a huge musical star. But as much money as he's made and as cool as some people think he is, he doesn't drive and just takes cabs around. I suppose this is cool if you live in an urban area and always have money to spend, but wouldn't it be cool to be able to drive in case of emergencies? Who knows? Maybe when you're as rich and famous as Robbie Williams is, there never is such thing as an emergency.
People in Los Angeles are known for driving everywhere that they go, so it's a bit surprising that one of the stars of Mad Men, Vincent Kartheiser, actually takes public transportation everywhere he goes, in part because it's stressful to drive but also because he's trying to do his part to decrease pollution. I would like to say that I think it's really cool that he's so forward thinking, but this is a car site after all, so I'll just say that I really think he needs to man up and start driving to work every day. Come on, Vincent... a little more pollution isn't going to hurt anyone. Well, not a whole lot anyway.
Rocky is one of a rare crew of stars who own several cars but don't drive themselves because they don't have to. This is kind of odd to me, I have to admit. I can see being totally rich and having one car that someone drives me around in, but why have a whole bunch? Does he just call down to the garage and have his driver show up in whatever car he asks him to? This is the thing—a guy who can't drive and owns ten cars is never going to be as cool as a guy who only owns one car but can drive himself wherever he wants to go. This is a classic case of someone trying way too hard to be cool and doesn't quite get away with it.
Some celebrities actually come right out and admit what their problems really are. Lena Dunham has actually come out and said that she's terrified to drive. She said, “I don’t drive. It’s not going to happen. Some people are not meant to be mothers, and some people are not meant to drive." This is obviously a bit of a cop-out. I don't know if equating not being a good mom with being a good driver works. After all, anyone can learn to drive. Being afraid of driving might be an excuse, but it isn't a very good one. Regardless, don't expect to see Lena driving next to you on the highway anytime soon.
Emma Roberts not being able to drive? Say it isn't so. She's about the coolest thing going— how could that be possible? At one point, she had her permit. Then, she failed her driving test, and then her permit expired, so when she took it again, she failed the test for her permit. This is just one of those things where even when someone seems like he or she's totally perfect and has it all going on, when it comes right down to it, we all have some things that we're not all that good at, and it turns out that for Emma, one of those things happens to be driving. Get it together, Emma. We all believe you.
There are some people who don't drive for different reasons than a lot of us might think of, and one of them is the fear of police. Take Kurrupt, for example. He says that he hasn't driven in a long time because of fear of racial profiling. Now, I get that's a real thing, but I've always been someone who tries to do what I want to do and not worry too much about letting other people have control over me. But then again, I haven't had the same kind of background as Kurrupt has. One thing's for sure—it's totally his decision whether or not he wants to drive or whether or not he feels safe doing so in the racial climate of today.
Barbara Walters sure doesn't seem like the type of person who'd be worried about driving, but she's now almost 90 years old and has never learned how to drive. That's what makes so many of these people on this list so interesting—they all are huge successes in other areas of their lives, and they all have made an enormous amount of money doing what they do, but yet, they haven't achieved something that most of us consider being a very easy and simple thing to do. It really makes these people seem even more interesting in certain ways. How can they achieve so much and still not do something so easy for the rest of us?
If I were to try and guess which celebrities didn't drive, I never would have guessed that Elvis Costello would be one of them. Elvis Costello has long been thought of as one of the most creative singers and songwriters in the pop-music world, so it's a bit surprising that someone with his many talents has never been someone who's gotten used to driving a car. How can that be? The word is that Costello was simply too busy to learn how. I don't know about that one—I'm not buying it. We all have to prioritize what we do in a day, and it sounds like he just wasn't all that interested in figuring out how to drive.
Charlie Watts is known not only for being the excellent drummer for The Rolling Stones but also for being a bit eccentric. So, it isn't all that surprising that he doesn't have his license. He's actually a horse breeder, though, so while he doesn't spend a lot of time driving around in cars—at least driving them himself, that is— he does spend a lot of time riding around on horses. Somehow, the fact that Charlie doesn't have a license just seems to mean that he's cool, whereas a lot of the others on this list just seem like the total opposite. I guess that comes with being in The Rolling Stones.
