Celebrities these days have to be constantly on the alert for the paparazzi, who lay in wait for them whenever they leave the house. It must be absolutely exhausting knowing that every time you step out of the front door, there's going to be an army of photographers just waiting to spot a fashion faux pas, a stray hair out of place, or you driving around in a crappy car.

It's no wonder that many movie stars, musicians, TV personalities, and even politicians employ an army of people to make sure that they always look their best. These people style everything from their hair and clothes to their homes and can even advise them on what car they should drive.

Of course, there are always plenty of Hollywood mavericks who choose to go their own way, dressing down, choosing their own style, and even driving crappy cars—or if not crappy cars, then certainly not the sort of luxurious motors you'd expect to see a famous face driving.

It just shows that even with almost unlimited funds at their disposable, some people simply see a car as something to get them from A to B and not an accessory to their outfit. 20 Christian Bale- Toyota Tacoma Truck

As reclusive billionaire Bruce Wayne, Christian Bale may have chased bad guys around the streets of Gotham City in the ultimate luxury car, but in real life, the actor’s motor is about as far from the sleek, sophisticated, and highly desirable Batmobile as it's possible to get. In fact, the only thing that the infamous and legendary Batmobile has in common with Christian Bale’s own ancient and battered Toyota Tacoma truck is the color—black! British actor Bale has always preferred to do things his own way, choosing unusual, independent movie roles and eschewing the traditional trappings of Hollywood in favor of a quieter life, so it's hardly surprising that he would pick such a low-key vehicle in which to get around.

19 Justin Bieber- Smart Car

In the eyes of his Beliebers, singer and teen icon Justin Bieber can do no wrong, although even the most devoted fans must've doubted that their idol had made the right choice when he was spotted by the paparazzi driving a Smart car. These tiny vehicles, more suited to commuters or moms on the shopping run, are hardly a common sight in Hollywood. In fact, the only nods to his celebrity status were the blacked-out windows and the rather snazzy matte bodywork–which just looked out of place on such an understated vehicle. To complete his embarrassment, Bieber even managed to run over several members of the paparazzi while driving–although whether a Smart car could do any damage is up for debate.

18 Leonardo DiCaprio- Toyota Prius

Given his well-publicized dedication to protect Mother Earth and our natural environment, it's no surprise that movie actor and activist Leonard DiCaprio has elected not to drive around Hollywood in a gas-guzzling sports car or a polluting SUV. Instead, the Titanic star has gone completely to the other end of the scale, choosing to drive a very environmentally friendly Toyota Prius. This nature-loving car can run on either electricity or regular gas and is fast becoming not only one of the bestselling hybrids in the US but also one of the most popular cars, full stop. It looks as though Leo is trendsetting again when it comes to his choice of vehicle, and as the look of these cars develops, more celebrities will surely follow his lead.

17 Pope Francis- Renault 4

His Holiness is another entry on this list who doesn’t quite fit the “celebrity” description, but considering Pope Francis’s importance to the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics, he surely counts as a famous face. Popes are more usually known for their “Popemobiles”–the specially adapted vehicles they use to allow crowds to see them as they're passing through towns and cities but which still provide them with added security. The notoriously grounded Pope Francis has already had the protective glass removed from these vehicles, while his own personal car is a very humble Renault 4, given to him second-hand by an Italian priest. He even turned down the gift of a white sports car from Lamborghini, preferring instead to auction the car off for charity.

16 Mel Gibson- Toyota Cressida

Despite his repeated indiscretions in recent years, including a couple of DUIs, Aussie actor Mel Gibson is still considered by many of his fans to be Hollywood royalty, thanks to his many movie successes over the years. Yet, you'd never guess that once upon a time, he was one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood when you look at the car he chooses to drive. The Braveheart star now gets around in a beat-up Toyota Cressida, a particularly unlovely-looking sedan car dating from the late-'90s. He's also been spotted tooling around Malibu in a tiny $12,000 Smart car—all a far cry from the good old days when he took home an astonishing $30 million paycheck to make Lethal Weapon 4.

15 Mark Wahlberg- Toyota Sienna Minivan

If Mel Gibson is considered to be yesterday’s man, then rapper-turned-actor Mark Wahlberg is still very much at his peak in Hollywood. He may have made his name as singer Marky Mark when he performed in the 1990s with the Funky Bunch, but since he made the switch to acting, his career has only gone from strength to strength—which makes it a bit of a surprise that he hasn’t bothered to splash the cash on a fancy motor vehicle to match his new Hollywood standing. Instead, Wahlberg can often be seen driving around in a very family-friendly Toyota Sienna minivan. Of course, when you have four kids to take care of, you need something practical and safe in which to ferry them all around!

Singer Britney Spears may have cultivated a clean and wholesome image when she first burst onto the scene in 1998, but she's had more than her share of issues to deal with in the years since. She may have made some unwise choices when it came to men, but her choice of car is pretty practical–if a little basic for a celebrity of her stature. The "...Baby One More Time" singer likes to get around in a cute white Mini Cooper, a classic British car that's been popular with drivers around the world for decades. Britney’s Mini is a convertible, to make the most of all the California sunshine, but it's still a modest set of wheels for a celebrity.

13 Conan O’Brien- Ford Taurus

Conan O’Brien certainly isn’t short of a few quid thanks to his successful career on TV talk shows like Late Night, The Tonight Show, and Conan, his current program on cable channel TBS. Yet, the flame-haired host insists on staying loyal to his first motoring love when it comes to his favorite car, showing off his beloved 1992 green Ford Taurus at any opportunity and singing its praises whenever he gets the chance. In fact, Conan’s love for his Ford Taurus is so strong that he even ridicules his guests for their decision to drive far more expensive cars, such as Simon Cowell’s custom Bugatti. It’s unusual to see celebrities staying so true to their crappy cars even when their bank balance allows them to trade up.

12 Warren Buffett- Cadillac XTS

Financier Warren Buffett may not be a celebrity in the Hollywood sense of the word, but as the third-richest man in the world, with a fortune of $84 billion to his name, his is certainly a recognizable face. Buffett is as famous for his charity work and good deeds as for his business acumen and success, and he's also renowned for his spendthrift ways, famously preferring cheap McDonald’s breakfasts to fine dining at five-star restaurants. This frugality obviously extends to his cars, too; Buffett drives a basic Cadillac XTS bought in 2014 and has often spoken of how he doesn’t see the point of replacing cars with new models too often, as he only drives a few thousand miles each year.

11 Jennifer Lawrence- Volkswagen Eos

When she sashays her way down the red carpet at exclusive parties and film premieres, Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence looks like the very epitome of Hollywood glamor. However, The Hunger Games star is well known to have a more down-to-earth, fun-loving, and even kooky side, and this aspect of her personality has definitely been reflected in her choice of car. Rather than plumping for a luxury sports car or a bulky SUV, J-Law has instead opted to drive a sporty white Volkswagen Eos. This hard-top convertible may only have a 2-liter, 200-horsepower engine, but it’s fun and young style suits Lawrence’s personality perfectly. The actress has owned the car since at least 2013 and, as yet, shows no sign of trading in her beloved motor.

British singer Lily Allen has always had an unconventional style all her own. From the early days of pairing prom dresses with sneakers in the video for her debut single Smile to her more sedate but always individual yummy-mummy look, it's hardly a surprise that Allen has also flouted celebrity convention when it comes to her choice of cars. Before she became a mum to Marnie and Ethel, a younger Lily drove a bright-green Ford Focus–a car of choice for boy racers across the UK who want to emulate Fast and Furious on a budget. It seems that Allen knew how to handle her car, too, with a YouTube video circulating of the singer performing handbrake turns in a deserted car park!

9 Alfred Morris- 1991 Mazda 626 Sedan

Dallas Cowboys running-back Alfred Morris is almost as infamous for his crappy car as he is for his exploits on the football field. The sports star may have recently signed a new contract worth a jaw-dropping $5.5 million, but he was certainly in no rush to head to the nearest car showroom to splash the cash. In fact, Morris still drives a 1991 Mazda 626 sedan that he bought many years before he hit the big time. Morris paid just $2 for the Mazda, buying it from his local pastor when he was still a student at Florida Atlantic University. Nicknamed “Bentley,” the car has huge sentimental value for Morris, and he takes it wherever he plays, parking it in the players’ lot alongside his teammates’ much more expensive and flashy motors.

8 Jeremy Piven- Ford Bronco

In his role as Ari Gold on Entourage, Jeremy Piven is all about getting his hands on the finer things in life, and he would certainly never be seen dead driving a battered old jeep like Piven himself. In truth, while Piven’s jeep may not be much to look at and is a far cry from the sporty convertibles usually seen driving around Hollywood, his car is actually something of a classic. Piven’s motor is an old Ford Bronco from the 1960s, a motor that's been restored and reconditioned and is a pretty sweet ride for enjoying the California coastline. It may be that Ari has rubbed off on Jeremy more than he might like to admit, as it was recently reported that he had added a Lamborghini to his collection.

7 Kristen Stewart- Mini Cooper Coupe

Famous for her role as teenage vampire enthusiast Bella Swan in the hugely popular Twilight series of movies, actress Kristen Stewart enjoyed enormous success at a relatively young age—usually a classic combination for a series of unwise spending decisions, including outrageous and expensive motors. Kristen went down a very different route, however, taking a leaf out of Britney’s book by driving around LA in her very own Mini Cooper Coupe. Her relaxed attitude towards her choice of car also seems to extend to the care of her vehicle as well, as when Stewart is pictured with her Mini Cooper Coupe, it's often in need of a run through the car wash, not unlike the actress herself, according to some unkind Hollywood commentators…

6 Justin Timberlake- 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Justin Timberlake isn't just one of the coolest guys in pop, but he's even managed to make a relatively successful move to acting, with a number of critically acclaimed successes on the silver screen. He's married to the incomparably beautiful Jessica Biel and enjoys a life of luxury that most of us can only dream of. And yet, there's one aspect of the Timberlake lifestyle that even us ordinary mortals can aspire for, and that's his choice of motor. The former NSYNC star drives a very modest 2002 Volkswagen Jetta, which is thought to have cost just $16,000 when new and is probably only worth about half that amount now. Given his $7 million fortune, the Jetta obviously has sentimental value for JT.

5 Zac Efron- Vintage Oldsmobile Alero

Former teen idol Zac Efron, star of the hugely successful High School Musical franchise, obviously loves his vintage cars if his peculiar choice of wheels is anything to go by. Even after he hit the big time, Efron continued to drive the vintage Oldsmobile Alero, which was given to him by his grandfather when he was a teenager–although seeing as grandpa also gave the young Zac a 1965 Mustang and a Delorean, which he had restored himself, one can only guess as to why the clunky and unlovely Oldsmobile held such a special place in Efron’s heart. The actor did eventually part company with the treasured car, giving it away to a fan in a draw to raise money for the Make A Wish Foundation.

4 Selena Gomez- Ford Escape

Zac Efron’s humble approach to motoring obviously had an effect on fellow teen star and close friend Selena Gomez if her own choice of wheels is anything to go by. When the singer and Disney Channel actress went to buy her first car, she didn’t go for anything too flashy or even anything that matched her cute girl-next-door image. No, instead, Ms. Gomez went for the very practical and pretty dull Ford Escape, a basic SUV model that's more usually driven by soccer moms than superstars. Selena has since upgraded to a more sophisticated $700,000 Porsche, much more in keeping with her Hollywood lifestyle, but she's still kept hold of her trusty Ford Escape for those occasions when only an SUV will suffice.

3 Ludacris- 1993 Acura Legend

In the world of rap, there's no such thing as less is more, and flashing the cash is par for the course. Rappers are notorious for their lavish and expensive lifestyles; in fact, most of their biggest hits are about their over-the-top partying and spending habits. The cars are part of that rap lifestyle, which is what makes rap star Ludacris’s choice of wheels so surprising. Favorite among his collection of cars is a 1993 Acura Legend, a battered wreck with 280,000 miles on the clock that Ludacris bought before he was famous and which he still calls his dream car. Recently, Acura took pity on the rapper and gave his dream car a full paint job, restoring it to its former 1990s glory.

2 Ryan Gosling- Toyota Prius Hybrid

Ryan Gosling isn't just one of the coolest guys in Hollywood, but he also cares for Mother Nature, if his choice of car is anything to go by. Gosling likes to take long drives in his $40,000 Toyota Prius hybrid–a far cry from the beautiful vintage cars he drove in his iconic roles in The Notebook and, more recently, the Oscar-winning La La Land. Gosling doesn’t even have a collection of cars, preferring to use his Prius to get around day to day and still using one of his trusty motorcycles when he wants to experience something a little more adrenaline-fuelled. Like his character in Beyond The Pines, Gosling loves to ride and even did many of his own stunts in the movie.

1 LeBron James- $33,000 Jeep

The vehicle driven by basketball superstar LeBron James was actually pretty expensive–but it can only be described a crappy car nevertheless. James drives a $33,000 Jeep Wrangler, which he spent another $30,000 customizing with a bright-orange paint job, a black and orange interior with LeBron’s ‘King James’ crown logo stitched into all the seats. It may have cost a combined $60,000, but it's a classic example of how all the money in the world doesn’t necessarily buy you good taste. James has a collection of vehicles, and when he was a high school senior, a $50,000 SUV became the center of an investigation into whether it really was a gift from his mother or an illegal signing-on incentive from a college…
