The 2019 Ford GT gets another special edition model in the Carbon Series that is 40 lbs lighter than the original.

We always thought that Ford GT already had plenty of carbon fiber to keep it as light as possible, but carbon fiber is sort of like Jello: there’s always room for more.

Taking the classic jingle to heart, Ford engineers made the 2019 Ford GT 40 lbs lighter thanks to yet more carbon fiber on top of the carbon fiber monocoque chassis and body panels that it was already made with. They call it the Carbon Series, and you might be wondering just where they found room for more carbon.

Turns out it was in the wheels all along. The GT’s 20-inch wheels have now turned into pure carbon versions to match the exposed carbon fiber stripe that now runs down the middle of the car.

In addition to getting lighter wheels, the GT Carbon Series gets a new, lighter titanium exhaust, new titanium lugnuts, and a new polycarbonate engine cover with additional venting (which means it also has less material and is therefore lighter).

However, just because the Carbon Series is lighter doesn’t mean it’s entirely barebones. Unlike the Competition Series, the Carbon Series still manages to retain its radio, Sync 3 Infotainment system, and crucially, the air conditioning. But they tossed the cup holders and the front storage bins, so while you can comfortably listen to your tunes, you can’t stop by a Starbucks for a Frappuccino.

As befits the name, there’s far more carbon fiber exposed on the Carbon Series than any previous GT, with the center stripe, side mirrors, and most of the interior proclaiming a love of carbon. But it’s not all grey on the Carbon Series: you can choose from 4 new color options (silver, orange, red, or blue) to accent the center stripe, brake calipers, and side mirror caps.

Pricing was not announced for the Carbon Series, but you can bet it’ll be more expensive than the car’s $450,000 base price. Not that you’ll be able to buy one; Ford is only making one Carbon Series GT per week, and you’ll have to submit an application to buy it just like everyone else. If you’re not a celebrity or someone with a million subscribers on social media, good luck.

Also, if you already bought a Ford GT and now you want the Carbon Series, you’ll still have to re-apply. It looks like there really are some things that money can’t buy.
