The 2019 Ram HD Chassis Cab has arrived with huge torque and massive towing figures to help with any job imaginable.
The towing wars are on. Chevrolet recently unveiled their new Silverado HD pickup with a massive 35,500 lbs of towing. That’s a lot of stuff to haul around, roughly the equivalent of two-and-a-half elephants. Now, Ram has unveiled their 2019 HD Chassis Cab with slightly less towing (35,200 lbs) but the ability to be fitted with any number of aftermarket rear modules to handle far more jobs than just towing around a pair of elephants.
Most of that massive towing figure comes thanks to a brand new Cummins 6.7-L inline 6-cylinder diesel engine. This redesigned motor is now 60 lbs lighter thanks to an engine block made out of graphite iron that also reduces vibrations. The engine additionally received new rocker arms, valves, springs, and a hollow camshaft for even more lightness, along with new oil and water pumps with aluminum housings.
Add it all up and you get a diesel engine with 360 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque.
The old 6.4-L HEMI V8 engine returns for more duty, but this time comes with either an 8-speed automatic transmission on the Ram 3500, or a 6-speed automatic on the Ram 4500 and 5500. The Cummins diesel only has a 6-speed auto.
With the 8-speed automatic the HEMI V8 makes 410 hp, while in 6-speed auto forms the engine makes 370 hp. Both configurations get 429 lb-ft of torque.
And before you think that 8-speed is best due to the increase torque, consider that the 6-speed automatic comes with fancy cylinder deactivation and deceleration fuel shut-offs to be better on gas, as well as power take-off (PTO) on either the right or left side.
Ram said that the HD Chassis Cab is overall 120 lbs lighter no matter what configuration you get it in, which helps bring gross vehicle payload up to 12,510 pounds.
Other than that, the Ram HD gets a host of technological upgrades, including a 12-inch infotainment system, a new and better HVAC system, and driver assistance tech like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking (AEB), and AEB with trailer brakes.
The Ram HD Chassis Cab goes on sale second quarter this year with pricing to be announced closer to arrival.
