2019 Subaru Crosstrek PHEV To Be Manufacturer's First Plug-In Hybrid

2019 Subaru Crosstrek PHEV To Be Manufacturer's First Plug-In Hybrid

Subaru just announced their first ever plug-in electric hybrid car, and it’s coming to America.

It’s called the 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid, and it is Subaru’s first true foray into an electric drivetrain. Built on Subaru’s Global Platform, the Crosstrek Hybrid can be driven like a conventional hybrid, sipping gas and using electricity where appropriate, or it can be put in all-battery power mode for local commuting.

Subaru didn’t release any photos of the upcoming hybrid, so we’re forced to use snapshots of the former conventional hybrid Crosstrek from 2014. Subaru said in their press release that "the Crosstrek Hybrid is an advanced, eco-friendly version of the versatile compact SUV that has become the brand’s third best-selling model in America."

The Japanese carmaker famous for its all-wheel-drive cars went on to say "the Crosstrek Hybrid combines the wide-ranging off-road capability of the gas-powered Crosstrek with hybrid efficiency."

The Crosstrek Hybrid sources Toyota for their hybrid powertrain, using the same Toyota Hybrid System (THS) as seen on various Toyota models including the Prius Prime. Subaru didn’t release any specs on the battery, so the all-electric range will be a bit of a mystery. We’re fairly certain that the Crosstrek will retain its 2.0-L 4-cylinder boxer engine, which puts out 154 hp and 145 lb-ft on all four wheels.

However, we know that the Prius Prime gets 25 electric miles per battery charge, so we can assume the Crosstrek will get a few less than that since the Prius powers only two wheels while the Crosstrek powers all four. Expect something around 22 or 23 miles on a single charge, and the battery to be recharged overnight in about six hours.

It’s somewhat surprising that Subaru opted to bring back the Crosstrek for another round. Subaru discontinued the original Crosstrek hybrid in 2017 due to poor sales of their first conventional hybrid. There were rumors that we were in for a PHEV version of the Forester SUV, but it looks like those rumors were wrong.

The 2019 Crosstrek Hybrid goes on sale sometime near the end of 2018.
