Ever since the announcement of the first mid-engine Corvette in its almost 70 year history, news of the C8 has been followed in exacting detail. The first pictures. The first release of specs. The first testing mules seen marauding the streets. The first performance data released by GM. And now we can add another first to the list as Motor Trend was able to independently test the C8 Corvette's performance figures for themselves. The results meet pretty close to official data and bear testament to the car and what it represents. Let's go to the video tape.

The Motor Trend Test

The test setup was very simple. Motor Trend has conducted countless performance tests over the years measuring braking, slalom, 0 to 60 mph, G's, quarter mile, and others to give consumers accurate info and real world metrics. Manufacturer's have to be kept honest after all!

The car was a 2020 Stingray equipped with a 6.2 liter naturally-aspirated V8 engine cranking out 495 hp and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Motor Trend was able to coax some impressive numbers out of her with a 0 to 60 mph time of 2.8 seconds and a quarter-mile time of 11.1 seconds at 123.2 mph through the traps. The figure-8 results were equally solid with a time of 23.3 seconds and .9 G's.

What does all of this mean? Well, it just confirms that GM wasn't lying in the build up of the car or the specs and stats that they released. The car is a brutal performer meeting or exceeding the performance figures of cars such as the Porsche 911 Turbo, Lamborghini Aventador and others that cost upwards of 2 to 3 times more money. The Corvette is back on top and this is merely the first year of the mid engined cars release. With a host of hopped up versions to follow - namely the Z06, ZR1, and "Zora" supercar - you can be sure that more than a few European builder's are starting to sweat. Buckle up.
