General Motors have announced that the Corvette’s new LT2 V8 engine will be built in New York.

Last week, GM President Mark Reuss introduced the world to the all-new 2020 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray. The new mid-engine beast was the first of its kind and also the most powerful entry-level Corvette ever built. Featuring a 6.2-L LT2 naturally aspirated V8 engine with 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque (when equipped with the performance exhaust), the 2020 Stingray will also be the fastest base-model Corvette ever made with a zero to sixty time of under three seconds.

We already knew that the Stingray would be built at GM’s Bowling Green Kentucky plant from an earlier announcement, but now we also know where the Corvette’s engine will be sourced as well: Tonawanda, New York.

“The 2020 Stingray is Chevrolet’s first production mid-engine Corvette – the fastest, most powerful entry Corvette ever – offering new levels of performance, technology, and craftsmanship,” said Reuss during a visit to the Tonawanda engine plant to make the announcement. “The Tonawanda team is up to the challenge to build this new LT2 engine at world-class quality levels that Corvette customers have come to expect.”

Currently, the Tonawanda engine plant employs 1,500 workers that produce a variety of engines for GM products. Those engines include 2.0-L turbo and 2.5-L 4-cylinder units for a variety of cars such as the Chevy Camaro, Impala, and Malibu, as well as smaller SUVs and crossovers like the Buick Regal and the Chevy Traverse.

Tonawanda also builds engines for larger pickups and SUVs, including GM’s 4.3-L, 5.3-L, and 6.2-L V8s, as well as the 6.6-L HD Small Block V8 found in the Silverado and Sierra HD pickups.

GM has invested $300 million in Tonawanda since 2016, with the culmination of their efforts showcased in the 6.2-L LT2 V8 for the new Corvette. Production is expected to begin later this year, with deliveries starting soon after.
