The Fiat 124 Spider, doppelganger of the Mazda Miata, seems to be on life support. While the car is officially dead in Europe, it will continue to be sold in the United States ... for now. How long it will last after the 2020 model year, however, is anyone's guess. It seems that tightening emissions regulations in Europe made the low volume sports car unprofitable in the market. Given the similarly low sales figures stateside, I wouldn't be surprised if its complete demise in the U.S. isn't too far behind. And it's a shame really because it is a good looking car.

3 The Look

Built right alongside the Miata on the Mazda assembly line, the Fiat 124 Spider is more similar than different to its sister car. It possesses the solid bones of the Miata, its driving dynamics, ease of use, and reputation for reliability. The Fiat treatment is quite subtle but clearly differentiates the car from the more austere Miata with a more distinct face and accouterments.

2 Beneath Its Skin

Most of the suspension, brakes, and components under the hood are Mazda. Indeed, a quick look under the body will reveal Mazda stampings, stickers, and parts numbers throughout the car. The engine, however, is a bespoke 1.4 liter inline-4 turbocharged Fiat unit delivering 160 hp and 184 lb.-ft. of torque. While this is bested by the Miata's upgraded naturally aspirated 4 cylinder engine, the torque curve of the Fiat is much wider and flatter making for a more relaxed experience behind the wheel.

1 And Let's Not Forget

Some people just like the cachet of driving an Italian car, and on that the Fiat 124 Spider delivers. With a crisp, un-Mazda-like exhaust note and distinct Euro-focused looks, the Spider gives a terrific open-air experience. But if you want one I'd head on over to your local Fiat dealer soon, as that plug could be pulled at any moment. Buckle up.
