Check Out The 2020 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500

Ford has finally revealed the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 at the Detroit Auto Show.

The all-new Shelby GT500–the pinnacle of any pony car ever engineered by Ford Performance–delivers on its heritage with more than 700 horsepower for the quickest street-legal acceleration and most high-performance technology to date ever offered in a Ford Mustang.

The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 is finally here.

Few vehicles have been as hotly anticipated as the 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500. Shown for the first time at the Detroit Auto Show on Monday, we finally get to see the GT500 without camouflage or euphemism to hide its true form.

The only piece of bad news is that the new supercharged V8 engine might have lost a few ponies from earlier in 2018. Rumors were swirling that the 2020 GT500 would have upwards of 700 horses at its beck and call, but then a leaked set of teaser images later in the year said that it would have over 650 hp.

Ford’s press release states that the true number splits the difference. From a redesigned 5.2-L V8 found in the GT350, Ford adds a 2.65-L supercharger to make 700 hp on the nose.

We don’t have exact figures, but Ford promises mid-3-second zero to sixty times in addition to quarter-mile runs below 11 seconds. Ford won’t make the same empty promises that Dodge did for their Challenger Demon, it seems.

For the first time, a Mustang has a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission diverting power to the rear wheels. The largest brake rotors of any domestic sports car are grabbed by 6-piston Brembos, while the Mustang’s MagneRide magnetic adaptive dampers continue on from the GT350.

The Mustang GT500 will come with two available handling packages. The regular handling package has adjustable strut top mounts and a Gurney flap on the trunk lid, but the Carbon Fiber Track Pack is where the real money is. A set of 20-inch carbon fiber wheels come laden with Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires, an adjustable exposed carbon fiber GT4 track wing, and front splitter wickers with integrated dive plane are all part of the package, as is a rear seat delete.

And of course, there’s that gaping grille and vented hood, both of which provide 50% more engine cooling than the previous GT350.

Pricing and availability haven’t been announced yet, but we’re sure to get more of that later this year. We’re expecting a release date in the Fall, with pricing around the $100k mark for a loaded GT500.
