According to Tobias Moers, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG, the new 416-hp 2020 CLA45 S, considered the world’s most powerful compact car, was developed "to raise vehicle dynamics and the sporty driving experience to a level previously unimaginable in the compact class."
The car, launched in Madrid, Spain, features the 2.0-liter M139 engine, based on the M133, which delivers 208.9 hp/L. The CLA45 S, which also features an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, goes from zero to 62 mph in four seconds and has a top speed of 155 mph or 168 mph, depending on the configuration.
The CLA45 S includes AMGs distinctive Panamericana grille with 12 vertical louvres, a winged front spoiler treatment, extra aero bits around the front air intakes and Power Dome bumps in the hood. The new model also features wider side skirts and 19-inch twin five-spoke rims. In the rear, the CLA45 S has a prominent diffuser treatment, 90mm exhaust pipes and a lip spoiler on the trunk lid rather than the roof.
The interior displays a combination of Mercedes Artico faux leather and Dinamica microfiber trim, which is accented with yellow highlights, a Nappa leather and Dinamica AMG Performance wheel and sports pedals. As for technology, the car includes a twin widescreen MBUX instrument and media display with AMG-specific read-outs for gear selection, warm-up menu, car set-up, a G-meter, race timer and engine data. The standard Track Pack also features specific circuit layouts and data.
The vehicles safety features are impressive with ABS, BA, EBD, stability and traction controls, a reversing camera, Active Brake Assist, Adaptive Brake, Attention Assist, Blind Spot Assist, Cross-Wind Assist, Lane Keep Assist, a tire pressure warning system, the Pre-Safe accident anticipatory system, Traffic Sign Assist and Adaptive Highbeam Assist.
As for storage, the CLA45 S includes two cupholders in the center console, a lidded armrest between the seats with twin USB ports, spacious door pockets with room for bottles and a mid-sized glove box. The 460-liter trunk expands further with the 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat down. There are also tie-down hooks, a 12-volt outlet and elasticized storage pockets on both sides.
Finally, the Mercedes-AMG CLA45 S features notable braking power with six-piston callipers at the front and single-piston rear, on vented and perforated rotors.
