Saleen Automotive has been in the car customization and racing business since 1983. They currently develop bespoke supercars such as the old S7 and new S1, and develop and offer a range of hopped up Mustang packages, which is what they are known for.

This latest offering from the Corona, California tuning house takes the all-new 2020 Ford Mustang GT and soups it up to the tune of 800 hp. The Saleen S302 Mustang Black Label, however, is more than just a worked over 'Stang but a blast from the past. So if you favor supercar levels of performance from a (less than) mild mannered '80's flashback, then Saleen has a car for you. Let's take a look.

In the words of company founder Steve Saleen, "The current generation Saleen S302 has raised the ante in the GT category. Wind tunnel tested aero dynamics, a race proven suspension, and increased horsepower make this vehicle a serious contender. From an entry level White Label with 475hp, to the thunderous 800hp Black Label, all Saleen S302s have one thing in common: Race Proven Performance for the Street."

Saleen starts with a stock Ford "Coyote" engine and throws on a complete supercharger system with intercoolers, upgraded intakes, and a free flow exhaust system. It's also fitted with an Engine Oil Coooler, Racecraft suspension, Saleen slotted rotors and upgraded pads, a short throw shifter, and a Saleen ECU tune. The transmission is a massaged 6-speed MT82-D4 manual unit.

Honoring Saleen's Roots

In fit and finish it hearkens back to Saleen's halcyon days in the '80's as perhaps the top Mustang tuner in the country. And it's nice to see that he's getting back to his roots. The company has struggled as of late with its S1 Cup Series cancelled after 4 races last season and numerous financial difficulties. The video above gives a nice look at last year's model which isn't altogether different from the 2020 MY car. Check it out and buckle up.
