When Aprilia says it is updating the RSV4, the motorcycle industry had best pay attention. As one of the most competitive race bikes available on the market today, the RSV4 has been a cutting-edge platform that Aprilia has used to elevate the standards within the superbike class. It is a bike that leads by example, winning on the track and dominating on the street. So, when Aprilia announced it was releasing a new RSV4 for 2021, riders around the world clamored to learn more.

Aprilia's Fierce Flagship Get Race-Inspired Updates

Anyone who has ridden an RSV4 would say it flies and with aerodynamic updates for 2021, it now looks that way too. Winglets have been increasingly popular on the track as a way to improve downforce, and they have slowly been making their way into production models like the RSV4. Built into the double-wall fairings, the winglets on the 2021 RSV4 are the result of extensive computer modeling and real world testing. Their main function is to apply downward pressure on the front end, improving stability and even going so far as to limit wheelies when accelerating out of a corner. So, in addition to looking cool, the winglets are practical features that will aid the rider, especially under the rigors of racing.

The soul of the RSV4, namely that iconic 65° V4 engine, remains as well. The 1,100cc power plant will now be available in both the RSV4 and the RSV4 Factory models. This unique engine cranks out 217 hp and comes with the distinct features that have made this bike so competitive in the world of racing.

For 2021, the RSV4 Factory comes equipped with the Smart EC 2.0 suspension system from Öhlins. Via a collaboration with Aprilia, Öhlins is able to offer a semi-active suspension system that calibrates the fork, shock absorber, and steering damper hydraulics to suit the specific riding conditions. The system comes with two modes (semi-active and manual) and three maps that are set up for two track scenarios and one road setting. To put it simply, a lot of thought and energy went into the suspension and competitive riders will appreciate the level of adjustment available.

With all the tricks Aprilia has picked up on the track, the RSV4 also includes several features that will pay dividends on the street. The bike comes equipped with six riding modes, three for the track (Race, Track 1, and Track 2) and three geared for everyday riding (Street, Sport, and User). The User setting allows the rider to completely adjust the electronics, including traction control, wheelie control, engine brake, ABS, and more. Aprilia's thoughtful approach to design goes so far as to also address the lighting. The RSV4 has a twilight sensor that automatically turns on the low beam and when entering corners the "bending light" turns on to better illuminate the inside edge.

A complete summary of the features on the new RSV4 and RSV4 Factory would take more space than permitted here, but the highlights have been covered. Aprilia let the designers and engineers loose on this update for 2021 and buyers will certainly benefit. The RSV4 has been a class-leading bike for years and based on what Aprilia unveiled this week, that is likely to remain true for the foreseeable future.
