It was just this month that Lamborghini unveiled the final incarnation of the Aventador – the Ultimae. Lamborghini described the final model as combining the best of Aventador SVJ performance, the driving dynamics of the Aventador S, and the definitive Aventador design. However, Lamborghini is more than just one single model, as evidenced by its recent sales performance.

Lamborghini particularly had a successful year in 2020. During the year, the COVID-19 pandemic gave consumers little to no reason why they should part with their money to purchase new items. People had little to no reason to travel due to lockdowns. As a result, demand for vehicles dropped. That even partly caused the so-called semiconductor chip shortage.

Nevertheless, people with loads of money are still able to make their purchases. Thus, purchases for premium and sports vehicles continued. Lamborghini was able to take advantage of such demand and posted an all-time six-month sales record in the second half of 2020. In fact, 2020 was the second-best year ever for the carmaker.

It seems the carmaker has been able to keep things in motion, with 2021 turning out to be the best year for Lamborghini.

The year 2020 seemed to be a preview of greater things to come. While the year was marked by the great challenges of the global COVID-19 pandemic, Lambo's sales performance was particularly excellent. Worldwide deliveries were pegged at 7,430 cars, representing a drop of just 9% compared to 2019, which is a record for Lamborghini. The carmaker attributed the fall to a pandemic-related production shutdown that lasted around 70 days. A record second-half sales allowed the Lamborghini to post its second-best year so far.

The United States remained as the Italian carmaker's largest market in 2020, with the Urus SUV accounting for the bulk of sales (4,391 cars) in the year, as followed by the V10 Huracán (2,193 cars). When 2020 ended, Lamborghini already had a robust order portfolio, with more than half of 2021’s planned production already been assigned.

Strong orders in 2020 were especially thanks to six product launches in the year. Early on, the carmaker presented the coupé version of the new Huracán EVO Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) and followed it up in May with the Huracán EVO RWD Spyder. In July 2020, Lamborghini unveiled the Sián Roadster, followed by the track-only Essenza SCV12hypercar and the SC20 open-top track car type-approved for road use.

Lamborghini Is On Pace To Break 2021 Sales Level

For the all-time record, in terms of deliveries, 2019 was the best year for Lamborghini. In the year, global sales surged 43% to 8,205 units delivered to customers. The Urus led all models with 4,962 units, as followed by its two super sports car model lines, V10 Huracán (2,139 units) and V12 Aventador (1,104 units).

Lamborghini, however, is poised to break the global sales record of 2019. In that year, the Italian carmaker posted its best-ever first-half sales (until 2021), delivering a total of 4,553 cars to customers around the globe. In comparison, Lamborghini already logged global sales of 4,852 cars in January-June 2021, posting its new best first-half ever. This represents a sales surge of 6.6% compared to the first half of 2019. If the current pace continues, Lamborghini should be able to sell more in full-year 2021 than it sold in the full year 2019 (8,205 units).

According to the Italian carmaker, sales of all its models have surged in the first half of 2021. For instance, deliveries of the Urus Super SUV soared 35% year-on-year to 2,796 units. Its two super sports car model lines remained undaunted, with sales of the Huracán climbing 46% to 1,532 units and deliveries of the Aventador leaping 21% to 524 units.

The US remains Lamborghini's largest market with 1,502 units delivered in the country. Lamborghini's other large markets include China Mainland, Hong Kong and Macau (602), Germany (391), the UK (318), Japan (258), the Middle East (226), and Italy (197). Overall, Lamborghini is selling its cars to 51 markets, as represented by around 168 dealers.

All Is Green For Lamborghini From 2021 And Beyond

The Italian carmaker is seeing all green for the full year 2021. This is because the orders that Lamborghini has taken already cover production for the next 10 months. This means a positive outlook for Lamborghini, since it will not run out of cars to produce until April 2022.

The second half of 2021 would determine whether Lamborghini can set a new sales record. Nevertheless, the carmaker is bullish on its sales performance for the rest of the year. After recently launching the Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae, Lamborghini will finally bring the Huracán STO to the market this summer. The carmaker is also all set to unveil a new product in the summer.

But Lamborghini isn't finished yet. It plans to hybridize its next product generation starting in 2023. As President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann has said that this is part of the company's new industrial plan that calls for electrification of its product range, with Lamborghini planning to invest over $1.8 billion by 2024.
