Hailed as the world's first super sport utility vehicle, the Lamborghini Urus delivers extreme performance in the luxury segment. What at first may have looked like a gamble when Lamborghini unveiled the Urus has since paid off for the Italian luxury car brand—big time—having already reached the impressive milestone of producing 15,000 models in July 2021. On a sales front, the Urus doubled Lamborghini's total volumes in 2019, the SUV's first year, and outsold its low-volume supercars in 2020. As Lamborghini blazes ahead with the 2021 Lamborghini Urus and beyond, the polarizing SUV looks to have silenced the naysayers, for now.

The 2021 Lamborghini Urus is, however, not alone in the super luxury SUV segment, where it competes with other alternatives such as the Aston Martin DBX, Bentley Bentayga, and Range Rover SVAutobiography. Even the lavish, more expensive Rolls-Royce Cullinan has a stake in this fight, albeit for an elite clientele. Lamborghini's SUV will appeal to women and families most, but others shouldn't write it off so quickly: there's enough horsepower underneath the hood to satisfy most driving enthusiasts.

One Of The Highest Specific Power Outputs In Its Class

The Urus had the honor of being the first turbocharged V8 Lamborghini, a formula that remains the same in the 2021 model. A twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 front engine powers the Urus, which is capable of pumping out 641 hp at 6,000 rpm, and 626 lb-ft of torque at 2,250 rpm. Here's some impressive stats Lamborghini provides about the Urus: the four-door hatchback offers the best weight-to-power ratio in its class with 3.38 kg/hp, and one of the highest specific power outputs at 162.7 hp/l.

Lamborghini Urus Features Specialized AWD

ANIMA

The five-passenger people-mover has an eight-speed automatic transmission that works with a specialized, all-wheel drive system. Raising the Urus's off-road cred is a Torsen central self-locking differential to prevent drivers from getting stuck on rocky or muddy terrain. Popular in AWDs, there's also a torque-vectoring rear differential to improve traction.

Owners can tap into the vehicle's driving modes using the ANIMA system with three on-road and three off-road modes to choose from. A seventh mode, appropriately dubbed EGO, lets users configure their own custom settings to their liking.

Record-Breaking Performance And Exciting Acceleration

One of the big selling points to the Urus is the super SUV's impressive acceleration figures. It can sprint 0-60 mph in a claimed 3.6 seconds—a gross under-representation of what this vehicle is truly capable in a straight line. YouTube channel DragTimes tested the extreme SUV back in 2018 and achieved a 2.93-second zero-to-60-mph run.

It takes the Urus 12.8 seconds to sprint 0-124 mph, and it's capable of hitting a 190-mph top speed. From 62 mph, carbon-ceramic brakes bring all this power to a complete stop in 33.7 meters.

The Urus claimed a world speed record in March 2021 when it dethroned the previous record holder Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk by 11 mph driving over the ice of Russia's Lake Baikal during the Days of Speed. The record-breaking Urus hit 185 mph over a 1,000-meter distance.

Customizable Interior Built Around Sportiness Or Elegance

Sporting an eye-catching exterior that draws inspiration from the Countach and LM002 according to Design Director Mitja Borkert, the Urus's interior has a more aerospace-inspired vibe. The dashboard sports the familiar Y-shaped design shared across Lamborghinis, and occupants will have access to three thin-film transistor technology displays.

Prospective buyers have a wealth of options to choose from regarding colors and materials, such as Alcantara, aluminum, carbon-fiber finishes, or wood to fashion the interior's feel according to their preferences depending on if they want something sporty or elegant.

Upping the vehicle's sophistication factor are a host of features that come with the Urus's Body Color Style Package, featuring a panorama sunroof, massaging and ventilated seat, Bang & Olufsen sound system, customizable ambient lighting, and more.

The Least-Expensive Lamborghini Available

As the least expensive Lamborghini available, the Urus serves as a tempting entryway into owning one of the iconic brand's luxury vehicles. Even still, the new Urus is far from cheap, having increased its starting price from the 2020 Lamborghini Urus by nearly $11,000, which brings the total MSRP for the 2021 base model up to $218,009.

For those with more capital to spend, there's the Urus Pearl Capsule. For a starting price of around $239,231, owners will have access to special colors, more custom interior options, and exterior details such as a rear diffuser and spoiler lip. If that's a tough pill to swallow, it's nowhere near as much as Mansory's Urus Supercar Blondie showed off.

There's a lot to love about the Lamborghini Urus, even if it's not to every enthusiast's tastes. For those it rubs the wrong way, think of it this way: the Urus became a huge home run for Lamborghini, which frees the brand up to ultimately make even more of the high-performance cars fans love.
