Mercedes' new Sportscar the 2021 AMG GT gives its rivals in McLaren, Aston Martin, and Porsche a run for their money. The base price for the AMG GT Coupe is a substantial $119,595 USD which means only the Porsche 911 can match it on "cheapness". The competitors to the AMG GT come in the form of the McLaren GT600LT, 570S, 570GT, and the Aston Martin Vantage. The 570s costing $195,000 and the Vantage costing $142,086.

However, don't think Mercedes is about to out-matched on price. Mercedes have brought out their all-new Black Series model, which will set you back a neat $400,000 (est.). The Black Series is the replacement for the now-discontinued R model. This time AMG seems to have been let loose on the GT as they have given it a mega 720 bhp twin-turbo V8 powertrain.

Mercedes have let go of the R-trim levels in favor of the new Black Series but what else have they added to the base models.

What's New?

The previous years' model GTs were quite powerful already but Mercedes doesn't want to stand still in this department. Mercedes have provided additional horsepower to all GT powertrains. They have installed an improved lithium-ion starter battery for better reliability. Fair to say they haven't just stopped at the powertrain either. They have added additional race modes, ride control with sports suspension (adaptive dampers), electronic limited-slip differential on the rear, and an improved braking system. All this to enable you to keep a firm handle on the beast that sits underneath the hood.

Mercedes have used their learnings from their GT3 and GT4 motorsport division. The front radiator air inlet is larger and positioned at an angle to provide a more efficient cooling system. They have designed a wheel well ventilation system in which air is taken from the front and directed through the car to the brake calipers. Depending on which driving mode you have selected, the carbon-fiber front splitter is remotely adjustable as well. Driving modes wise you can choose from; Slippery, Individual (a customizable setting), Comfort, Sport, Sport+, and Race. All modes have a different powertrain bhp setting as well.

What Are The Specs?

The 2021 AMG GT base model produces 523 bhp with 494 lb-ft of torque, which is certainly enough to get you to and from your local supermarket. Mercedes have yet to detail any more powertrain specifications for the higher trim levels like the GT C coupe or the GT C roadster. But we do know the specifications of the all-new Black Series model which provides 197 more bhp than the base model and 96 more lb-ft of torque (720 bhp, 590 lb-ft). Transmission-wise, Mercedes offer one great option with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

The usual Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) software is installed on the infotainment system but it is newly improved. To go with the high price tag your interior comes with a 10-speaker Burmester sound system. The system still incorporates voice-activated controls for the multimedia system based around artificial intelligence - like your Siri's and Cortana's. The system also has Apple Car Play and Android Auto functionality as standard. The 12.3-inch fully digital dashboard switches colors and settings according to which driving mode you select on the steering wheel - similar to that on the 911. The central console has a 10.3-inch screen which isn't a touchscreen, but a large knob on the console operates it instead.

Obviously owning a car of this stature and power is a nice experience for anyone. But to live with the AMG GT provides everyday functionality with a hint of recklessness whenever you want it. That twin-turbo V8 can behave around city streets but can also be let loose whenever you attend a track-day event. Its bucket seats provide a racing feel to the interior yet provide comfort and daily usability.

The only downside to that gorgeous sounding twin-turbo AMG V8 is its miles per gallon (MPG). Which as you would expect is rather poor. If you were to go for the base GT trim you may achieve 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on highways. If you were to choose some of the higher trim levels, you could go as low as 15 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on highways. Fair to say you will be spending more time at a petrol station throughout the year.

Overall, the AMG GT price tag comes with a lot of noise and luxury, and from what we can summarise it is worth it as well - if you are willing to overlook those MPG figures. The GT can do it all with city living and commuting to just going out for a grand tour. Its infotainment system provides enough usability to not leave you frustrated and wanting to destroy it with a hammer. The AMG GT may have lost its R-trim range for 2021 but the Black Series has more than made up for that loss.
