The second generation of the “future" from Toyota is here. Still powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, the new Toyota Mirai will arrive for the 2021 model year as the carmaker's new flagship sedan. It features a more practical yet elegant design laden with improved fuel technology and more cutting-edge elements.
2021 Mirai: Toyota New Design Flagship Sedan
The all-new Toyota Mirai is now underpinned by the GA-L platform also employed for the Lexus LS sedan. Doing so allowed Toyota to implement several changes that make the Mirai a better version of the future. For instance, the Mirai is now an RWD sedan with coupe-like proportions and a 50:50 weight distribution, as this led to a new layout for the fuel cell system and powertrain
Aside from superb handling agility and a smooth, quiet ride, the GA-L platform allowed for a more spacious interior with more usable cabin and trunk space. With this, the Mirai has become a design and technology flagship sedan that marries form with function. Compared to the previous Mirai, the next-gen model is longer, lower and wider with a super-low 0.29 coefficient of drag.
Second-Gen Mirai As Technology Flagship Sedan
The 650v fuel cell stack of the second-gen Mirai is around 20 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter than the previous stack, which is another reason why Toyota was able to make the RWD switch. Thanks to a number of enhancements, the new fuel stack delivers more power: 182 hp of max output and 221 lb-ft. of torque, with energy derived and stored in a smaller and lighter lithium-ion battery .
Other technological features of the second-gen Mirai include a new lighting signature (long, narrow headlights, and thin LED taillight panel), an 8-inch color TFT LCD digital gauge cluster, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen multimedia display, Bird’s Eye View Camera with Perimeter Scan, three 10,000-psi carbon-fiber-reinforced high-pressure tanks, Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, as well as several grade-dependent elements.
Toyota Mirai Is Now Available In Two Grades
Offered in five exterior colors, the 2021 Toyota Mirai is available in two grades making it accessible to a wider market: XLE and Limited. The Mirai XLE has a starting MSRP of $49,500 while the Limited version grade has a starting MSRP of $66,000. Each Mirai comes with up to $15,000 of complimentary hydrogen.
