Both the 2022 iX xDrive40 and 2022 iX xDrive50 BMW utilize BMW’s latest powertrain technology, the Gen5 electric drive unit. Equipped on both axles, each drive unit consists of an electric motor, one-speed transmission, and all the necessary electronics.

With two electric motors, this BMW iX will deliver a total output of 516 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque, propelling the electric SUV to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, according to BMW.

This time around, BMW cranks things up a notch with the power storage. The 2022 BMW iX comes with a 111.5-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack, which, by default, is the largest battery ever made from the BMW marque. This larger battery has many perks, one being that it permits a 300+ driving range, and the other that it also wants to take you back on the road as quickly as possible, despite the capacity. Fast-charging the battery at the 195-kW for 10 minutes will give 90 miles of range. DC fast charging for about 40 minutes should take the battery from 10 to 80 percent full, which is absolutely impressive. With 11-kW Level 2 charging, you can charge the battery from zero to 100 percent in about 11 hours.

In its dimension, the iX is largely alike to most SUVs in the BMW lineage. It has a similar length and width to the X5 mid-size crossover. In height, it’s very similar to the X6 sibling, and in wheel size, it matches the X7.

The iX has one of the most uniquely-built and spacious interiors, making it stand out from the BMW crossover SUV lineage. It flaunts premium styling materials, such as crystalized knobs and matte wood trim. We're particularly fond of the faux leather seats, which feature a perforated Sensatec upholstery, contributing to a more cushioned driving experience. For a more premium touch, BMW threw in an Oyster White seating finish.

The front cabin is expressive, oozing a feeling of openness and freedom. While considerably smaller than, say, the Tesla Model X, the driver and front passenger enjoys ample headroom and legroom, which, quite frankly, is the best in its class. The rear cabin is also large and roomy, with ample head and legroom that will sit above-average-sized adults comfortably.

The panoramic glass roof, which is the first in its class, features a Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal technology which provides electrochromic shading without a roof liner. For more pizzaz, BMW offers an optional deluxe package for $1,150. This unlocks an open-pore walnut wood backlit center console, a volume wheel, glass knobs and dials for the iDrive knob, and more.

The most attractive feature inside the BMW iX is the dashboard, which combines the 14.9-inch central infotainment system and multimedia screen and 12.3-inch information display in front of the steering wheel, essentially becoming one large, curved display. Like the i4 sedan, the BMW iX has the new iDrive 8 infotainment tech, which is the first automotive system to support 5G connectivity, paving the way for HD-quality video streaming and non-buggering music streaming experiences. Also, BMW Group Sound Design partnered with the famous film composer and Academy Award winner, Hans Zimmer, to create unique sounds for the iX.

The two-spoke steering wheel comes with some keys that you to personalize onscreen options, toggle between menus and layouts, navigate the displays, and toggle between menus. The integrated maps can learn your driving habits and suggest parking and charging station locations.

Inspired by its gas-propelled SUV siblings, the BMW iX offers unrivaled drive quality. It glides smoothly and quietly over any road surface, thanks to the self-leveling suspension system, as well as the shock absorbers, which are made with a high level of hydraulic damping. For added driving efficiency, the vehicle comes with an adaptive all-wheel-drive system that distributes the torque evenly to the front and rear motors.

The iX also has a noise-muffling interior, courtesy of the well-designed doors and dashboard. So, that tire, wind, or road noise won’t be much of a problem. Also, thanks to the flexible suspensions, you won’t feel much of the road or pavement imperfections either.

And although heavy, it feels light when you’re behind the wheel. The strong motors do an exceptional job of pulling the weighty SUV. Another noteworthy factor about the iX is that it has a low center of gravity, which means it’s less likely to flip, turn over or roll during a collision. This also has an impact on the acceleration, braking, and cornering too. So, don’t expect it to tilt much, even on the twistiest corners.

Unlike most EVs, the BMW iX comes with a four-mode regenerative braking system, which adapts to the surroundings and allows you to choose between low, medium, and high levels of regenerative braking - all of which are easy to operate.
