The Nissan Frontier is the company’s mid-size pickup in the United States, the brand having sold the car since 1997. In just a couple of days time, the Chicago Auto Show will kick off, and Nissan are set to have a big presence at the show. They will be bringing along three concept trucks, based on the 2022 Frontier, to showcase at the event.

The three concepts all have different names. These are Project 72X, Project Hardbody and Project Adventure. Project 72X is actually based on the Frontier Crew Cab S 4x4 grade and is a modern take on the classic Datsun 720 which was first introduced in fall 1979. The 2022 version has a gray exterior, white-painted steel wheels and PRO-4X tires. Project Hardbody pays homage to the Nissan D21 “Hardbody”, the first truck design completed at NDA. Built on the Frontier Crew Cab SV 4x4, the Hardbody has a 3-inch lift kit, block-style Hardbody wheels, 1980s style door graphics and a blacked out-front end to mimic the original truck.

Finally, there is Project Adventure. This is NDAs take on the popular overlanding trend, and uses the 2022 Frontier Crew Cab PRO-4X as its basis. The body wrap of the truck depicts an atlas of the United States, and the truck has a 5-inch lift kit, 34-inch mud terrain tires and a Yakima bed rack system to name just a few of its features. Unlike the other two concepts, this truck is not a retro-based example, and is a fully modern concept design with no inspiration from previous models.

There are other interesting details about the trucks too. For example, the white-painted steel wheels on the Project 72X truck are actually spare 2022 Frontier wheels. The Hardbody’s 1980s style graphics feature shadow outlining of the period, and a sport bar features modern, 10-inch LED lights. Project Adventure meanwhile has a special carbon fiber snorkel that is a design by NDA. All three trucks effectively combine readily available Nissan and aftermarket parts to craft them, and the trucks are a celebration of how customers have responded to the rugged design of the 2022 Frontier. They will be on display throughout the 2022 Chicago Auto Show.
