Dodge is bringing the rowdy Challenger back for 2022, and it still has everything enthusiasts love. Fans hoping for new features may feel disappointed, but at least there's one addition—made for thwarting off Challenger thieves—that looks worth the wait, along with all the usual customizable options that separate the ubiquitous muscle car from the pack.

Less known for its handling, the Challenger stands out among other American pony cars for its raw power and mean acceleration. While the Challenger lacks a convertible option—something the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro both offer—it's the only car in its class to offer all-wheel-drive options.

Discover everything Dodge has confirmed so far for the upcoming 2022 Challenger and why it remains a bargain performance machine.

Offering Pentastar V6 And Hemi V8 Engine Options

Largely responsible for the Challenger's appeal are the noisy engines that offer muscle car-like performance. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 cemented its place among world-class performance engines with its award-winning achievements. The 303-hp engine is back in the 2022 Challenger, and comes available in both the SXT and GT models.

However, the real engine that's going to satisfy enthusiasts is the Hemi V8. The R/T model comes with a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that delivers up to 375 hp. Owners who plan on taking their Challengers to the drag strip, though, will want the Demon-inspired R/T Scat Pack 1320 instead. This one comes with a naturally aspirated 392 (6.4-liter) Hemi V8 with 485 hp and 475 lb-ft of torque, which Dodge claims offers "the most muscle per dollar on Scat Pack models."

Two Drivetrain Options: AWD Or RWD

Having earned its place in history as the first production all-wheel-drive pony car, the Dodge Challenger will carry this performance landmark forward into 2022 as available options in the SXT and GT variants. Otherwise, expect rear-wheel drive for the rest of the lineup's models.

The TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard on all SXT and GT models (including AWD); R/T and R/T Scat Pack models get a Tremec six-speed manual with the optional automatic. While we usually prefer manual transmissions, the Challenger's automatic is the way to go for better control and throttle response.

The Challenger R/T Scat Pack inherits several components and technology from the SRT Demon including extreme-duty 41-spline rear axle half shafts, making it perfect for straight line performance on the strip. The Scat Pack comes with drag-focused tech including a TransBrake to keep the Challenger from moving before a standing start, Torque Reserve to deliver max performance at launch, and plenty more.

The Challenger R/T Scat Pack is no pushover when it comes to performance. A stock version can do the quarter mile in 11.70 seconds at 115 mph, explaining why Dodge calls it the "fastest naturally aspirated, street-legal muscle car available." It's capable of doing a zero-to-60-mph time in the low 4s. Owners who opt for the R/T Scat Pack Widebody model will get Brembo Performance Brakes and an Adaptive Damping Suspension.

Expect the 2022 Challenger's performance figures to look similar to 2021 models, with a likely 5.3-second zero-to-60 mph and 13.8-second quarter mile in the SXT and GT versions. For even more performance above the Challenger R/T and R/T Scat Pack, Dodge offers SRT Hellcat models.

The Challenger remains mostly unchanged for 2022 except for one new feature: a deluxe security alarm to combat muscle car thefts that comes standard on all models. All SXT, GT, and R/T models also receive Driver Convenience Group, which offers a myriad of features including a remote start system, blind spot and cross path detection, a rear parking assist called ParkSense, and more.

With seating for up to five, expect the Challenger's interior to remain roomy and comfortable with the option of Sport or Performance seats. Buyers can expect to benefit from as much as 16.2 cubic feet of cargo space in the trunk, the same as the 2021 Challenger.

The Challenger comes with a 7-inch infotainment system featuring Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There's five interior color options to choose from: Black, Black/Caramel, Black/Ruby Red, Demonic Red, and Sepia.

Dodge has yet to confirm pricing, but Kelley Blue Book expects the 2022 Challenger's starting price to land somewhere around $30,000 for the SXT. Assuming the higher models follow suit in adopting a similar price to the 2021 models, the SXT AWD and GT should start around $32,065, GT AWD at $35,065, R/T at $35,765, and R/T Scat Pack at $41,840.

Dodge has a host of Challenger packages available for buyers such as Widebody, T/A, and Shaker. Expect the R/T Scat Pack Widebody models to start at $47,490 and feature 20x11-inch aluminum wheels, Brembo six-piston brakes, and 3.5 inches of width added. The T/A package available on the R/T and R/T Scat Pack models should cost $3,995, and has a Satin Black hood, roof, and decklid, 20-inch wheels, and more. The Shaker package will likely set you back the same as it did in the 2021 model, costing $2,595 for a shaker hood and intake by Mopar, black rear spoiler, and more.
