Fisker is making sure that everything is set before it finally releases its Ocean electric SUV into the market in the fourth quarter of 2022. It has even inked a deal to build the Ocean off a Magna-developed FM29 EV platform to help keep pricing below $30,000. When it finally launches the Ocean, the electric SUV will feature the next generation of driver assistance dubbed as Fisker Intelligence Pilot (FI-Pilot).
A New Scalable Domain Controller Architecture
Just like the FM29 EV platform, the Fi-Pilot is a joint development project between Fisker and Magna. Fi-Pilot is essentially an advanced and scalable domain controller architecture that will allow Fisker to deliver distinct features in the new Ocean and future vehicles. This advanced electrical electronics platform can support a range of technologies as well as customer convenience features for the new SUV.
The aim of the new Fi-Pilot architecture is to offer a new type of mobility experience that customers would find relevant not just in a short period of time, but through the lifecycle of the vehicle. This will be implemented through state-of-the-art hardware and software packages that will be installed in the new Ocean.
Ensuring Relevant Features Throughout Vehicle's Lifetime
According to Fisker, the FI-Pilot will be able to accommodate multi-function autonomous systems that support Fisker-exclusive features. To ensure that the technologies stay relevant through the lifecycle of the vehicle, Fisker will provide over-the-air updates (OTA) through the Fisker AI cloud, thereby delivering new advanced product features as the vehicle ages.
In addition, the new FI-Pilot platform will allow the Ocean to accommodate advanced sensors such as including digital imaging radar and high-resolution cameras. These sensors are essential in supporting driver assistance elements for higher levels of autonomy.
Interestingly, the features underpinned by the FI-Pilot will be Cybersecurity compliant and can be suited to the Fisker ownership experience.
More Details To Follow Near 2022 Market Launch
Fisker is expected to release more details on the new FI-Pilot closer to the launch of the Ocean SUV. The company is eyeing to keep the price of the Ocean below $40,000. The Ocean is expected to have starting price tag of $37,499, which could still be trimmed when the $7,500 federal tax credit is accounted for.
