The ever-growing popularity of performance SUVs and Trucks, stateside, shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Largely popularized by the Ford Raptor, Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, and Dodge Ram SRT-10 of the early ‘10s, these bulky performance vehicles have enjoyed immense popularity thanks to a decade of relatively low fuel prices and the proven blend of capability between a truck’s practicality, and its newly found athletic ethos.

For the last ten years, carmakers have been running to implement their biggest engines into their most popular trucks, and have given us a multitude of pickups with coupe-like performance qualities.

Two years ago, Ram introduced its TRX crew cab when it took the Hellcat’s 6.2-liter supercharged V8 engine and stuffed it into the engine bay. Since then, we’ve seen the truck become the most powerful production pickup truck on the market today. Join us as we tell you everything you need to know about the new, 2022 Ram TRX 4x4 Crew Cab Pickup.

The Exterior Of The Ram TRX

In something in which Ram describes as, “an exercise in excess,” the TRX proves to be just that. With its eight extra inches of width (when compared to the regular Ram 1500), its gigantic 35” tires, altered body kit, and the TRX becomes increasingly closer to the size of an entire lane of traffic. But Ram wasn’t satisfied with merely stuffing the massive Hellcat engine in its bay, but completely updating the exterior to match the TRX’s performance.

Blending the TRX’s extra width with its body, the fenders and box-outers are flared the extra eight inches we mentioned previously, and feature seven aerodynamic air-flow features. The TRX also features an active cooling grill capable of providing 32.9 liters of air to the engine, every minute. It also features strategically placed LED light in the TRX’s functional hood scoop, said to give the car a unique custom look, right from the factory.

Finally, Ram features a few upgradable options for the exterior, such as a trophy truck inspired spare, mounted directly in the bed. Or an available RamBar which makes the bed capable of installing extra light mounts, providing extra tie downs for bed storage, or just to add a sporty look to the already beefy truck.

The Ram TRX's Interior

Like the majority of trucks that were developed to be capable, practical, work machines; the Ram has recently shifted its focus to creating more luxurious interiors within the previous decade or so. The new TRX offers two versions of their interior, with similar materials. However, similarities end there, with the black leather option costing another $3,500 towards the MSRP.

The base interior features two-tone black and red materials and accenting throughout the cabin and the seats are a combination of cloth and vinyl, keeping the black and red two-tone motif. As for the more expensive option, leather-trimmed interior features the more subtle, all-black color scheme.

For the remaining interior features, the two options largely share the same platform. Both featuring a flat-bottom steering wheel with aluminum shift paddles, performance inspired details from leather, brushed metal, to Alcantara suede with carbon fiber, 12” touchscreen, and finally a center-console mounted gear shifting, with manual shifting capabilities.

Safety And Technology

As with most cars and truck s on today’s market, a bevy of technological features are available on the TRX. However, for the purpose of brevity we’ll discuss what comes standard.

Previously mentioned, the TRX features a 12” touchscreen display. Technology also includes: 4G capable hotspot, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, and HD radio with six-month Sirius XM subscription, voice-command with Bluetooth capabilities, and multiple USB ports.

As for standard safety features, the TRX comes with electronic roll mitigation, which monitors the drivers speed to anticipate any wheel lift in the course of a roll-over, electronic-stability control, collision warning, hill start assist, and a back-up camera. Most impressively is the TRX performance pages. A dedicated page in the 12” touchscreen displaying gauges such as coolant temperature, oil pressure, air to fuel ratio, and much more to ensure the engine and drivetrain are running accordingly.

Performance Of The TRX

The 2022 Ram TRX features the same 6.2-liter, V8, supercharged engine as its Hellcat sibling, with power figures taking the ever-slightest dip in production. In the TRX, the Hemi engine is capable of 702-hp at 6,100 rpm. Mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, the super-truck provides 650 lb-ft of torque, available at 4,800 rpm.

Also, featuring launch-control, the TRX claims a 0-60 mph time of just 4.5 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 12.9 seconds. Which is absurd when realizing that puts it in the company of some legendary performance vehicles.

Fuel Economy Of The Ram TRX

With most performance oriented trucks, fuel economy (or lack thereof) takes a backseat in the engineering department, and the TRX is no different.

Weighing in at just under four tons, the TRX’s supercharged V8 proves to be extremely thirsty with its 10 mpg in the city, and 14 mpg on the highway. Chances are, these figures will prove to be even less, once the heavy-footed TRX owners begin to receive their vehicles, as it seems unlikely there will be any hyper-milers purchasing this truck.

The one redeeming quality is the Ram’s fuel tank capacity, clocking in at a massive 33 gallons, even with its puny MPG figures, should still see about 300 miles or so. Just expect a lofty gas bill, as the TRX’s Hellcat engine requires 91-octane to perform optimally.

Pricing For The TRX

When compared to its fellow performance-inspired trucks, the TRX, starts at a hefty $70,000. But as we dive deeper into the performance, technology, and interior features, the TRX doesn’t really have any competition. With its class leading 702-hp, only the special-edition Shelby F150 is capable of producing more power. And the F150 features an even more stunning price tag starting at $115,000, the TRX seems like a bargain at nearly $40,000 less. But when checking all the boxes the Ram provides on its build website, the TRX can reach over six-figures, pretty quickly. Not to mention the shady dealer tactic that’s become the norm, the TRX, has seen markups of nearly $40,000-$50,000.

Twenty years ago, one might’ve asked, who needs a six-figure truck, capable of nearly 1,000 horsepower? Two years ago, we received the answer to that question when the Ram introduced the TRX’s launch edition, limited to 702 examples, the truck sold out in less than three hours.

With no mention of the 2022 Ram TRX to be limited, one can only imagine it will be the best-selling performance truck, ready to dethrone the Ford Raptor.
