As automotive icons go, the Toyota Supra is one of the most legendary nameplates of all time. Since the launch of the original Supra in 1978, this sports car from Japan has rocked the world of car enthusiasts. Considering its huge tuning potential and being recognized as Paul Walker’s 10-second car in the Fast & Furious franchise, the Supra enjoys a cult following among gearheads around the globe.

The first four generations of the Supra were sold until 2002. In fact, sales in the U.S. stopped four years earlier than that, in 1998. Come 2019, Toyota brought back the iconic Supra name as an all-new fifth-generation model. Things were a little different this time though, as the new Supra would be built in collaboration with BMW, and it would also be based on the same platform as the Z4 two-seater sport roadster.

While the thought of having a Supra with a BMW engine/platform riled up many in the beginning, the fifth-gen model has now successfully established itself as a potent sports car that’s also worthy of its namesake. So, if you’re in the market looking for a thrilling sports car with a glorious past, the Toyota Supra is probably your best bet.

The Toyota GR Supra Is An Icon Reborn

The fifth-gen Supra is based on BMW’s CLAR platform that also underpins the Z4. Now, while it may share the platform with the drop-top BMW, the Supra is a two-door coupe. Not to mention, it looks completely different and has its own unique charm. The design takes clear inspiration from the FT-1 Concept car from 2014 and the production model stays quite true to the show car. The Supra has classic front-engine/rear-drive proportions – long-bonnet, reverse wedge cabin, muscular rear flares, and a sporty spoiler. The Supra looks modern and distinctive, and yet the curves on its body are reminiscent of its forefathers.

The 2022 GR Supra is available in four versions: 2.0, 3.0, 3.0 Premium, and, for this model year, Toyota has added a limited-edition A91-CF version. The GR Supra 2.0 is offered with 18-inch wheels, while the rest of the range rolls on bigger 19-inch wheels, albeit with different designs. You can differentiate the 2.0 version from the 3.0 variants further with its gloss black wing mirrors and polished stainless-steel tailpipes as compared to the matte black mirror caps, brushed stainless steel tailpipes on the 3.0 and 3.0 Premium.

The A91-CF Edition Supra stands out even more with its two special color options – Nocturnal (black) and Refraction (blue). In addition to that, it also gets a carbon fiber lip spoiler, carbon fiber mirror caps (available for $925 with the rest of the range), and matte black alloy wheels. Red brake calipers are available with the Premium and A91 variants.

The standard color palette for 2.0 and 3.0 has six shades to choose from. They are offered at no extra cost, except from the racy Nitro Yellow ($425). The Premium version adds another special Phantom (grey) color option, which costs a whopping $1,495.

2022 GR Supra Engines: Powered By BMW

The 2022 Supra is available with two engine options, and both are BMW-sourced, of course. The entry-level 2.0, as its name suggests, is powered by BMW’s 2.0-liter B48 four-cylinder turbo unit that is rated at 255 hp and develops 295 lb-ft of torque. The rest of the range features BMW’s B58 3.0-liter six-cylinder turbo that is good for 382 hp and 368 lb-ft. Both the engines are offered with 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. All versions are RWD.

Toyota claims the six-cylinder versions can clock 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, whereas the 2.0 will achieve the same in 5 seconds.

Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph in all the versions. However, when it comes to efficiency, the smaller 2.0 returns more as expected. According to Toyota, the 2.0 can return 28 mpg (combined), whereas the 3.0 versions will be thirstier (25 mpg).

Adaptive suspension and active rear sport differential are missing in the Supra 2.0. It also gets smaller 330 mm single-piston floating-caliper braking hardware at the front, as opposed to the 3.0 versions’ Brembo 4-piston fixed calipers with 348 mm discs.

2022 GR Supra Interior: Less Toyota, More BMW

While the Supra’s exterior is unique and has no resemblance to its BMW counterpart, the same can’t be said about the interior. There’s a clear BMW influence inside the cabin and whether it’s the dashboard design, infotainment screen, or buttons, it feels less Toyota and more BMW. Having said that, this also means the quality and fit-and-finish will be quite good.

Coming to the details, Toyota offers the 2.0 and 3.0 versions with black Alcantara/ leather-trimmed sports seats, while the 3.0 Premium comes with black leather sports seats. The A91 Edition gets black/blue Alcantara with leather-trimmed seats and contrast blue stitching. The Premium and A91 also get sporty stainless steel pedals.

In terms of features and equipment, there’s an 8.8-inch touchscreen that’s standard across the range, but it’s wireless Apple CarPlay compatible only in Premium and A91. Surprisingly, there’s no Android Auto connectivity with any version. Standard features include dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming rearview mirror, rain-sensing wipers, electric parking brake, cruise control, a rearview camera, and carbon-fiber interior trim. The 2.0 gets eight-way manually adjustable front seats as opposed to 14-way electrically adjustable seats in the six-cylinder versions. The Premium and A91 are equipped with additional features such as a wireless phone charger and heated seats. The A91 doesn’t get a head-up display but it’s a standard fitment in the Premium.

The base 2.0 versions get four speakers, while the 3.0 version comes with a 10-speaker system. The Premium and A91 come fitted with a 12-speaker JBL surround sound system as standard. The JBL system is one of the add-ons of the optional Safety and Technology pack that’s offered for the 2.0 and 3.0 versions at $3,485 and $3,155, respectively.

Driver assistance systems including Pre-Collision Alert with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, and automatic high beams are standard. Adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors with emergency braking function are part of the Driver Assist Package that’s a $1,195 option with the Premium and A91. In the 2.0 and 3.0 variants, you automatically get all of these systems when you tick the aforementioned Safety and Technology pack.

The Supra is a hardcore performance car, which justifies it being a strict two-seater. That said, its cargo volume of 10.2 cubic feet isn’t bad by sports car standards.

2022 GR Supra Prices

The 2022 GR Supra range kicks off with the 2.0 version at $43,090. The most affordable six-cylinder version is the 3.0, priced at $51,090. The 3.0 Premium retails for $54,590. The current top-of-the-line version is the A91 Edition at $54,795, but it’s limited to just 1,000 units. An extra $1,025 delivery fee is charged on all models.
