Out With The "T's" In With The "B's"

For 2022 Volvo ditches the previous 'T' designations on base models and replaces them with a 'B' tagline, in reference to the fact that all S60s are now hybrids. The base B5 Momentum is a mild hybrid. While the battery is enough to run essential interior functions, the engine only shuts off in a traditional start/stop manner. The base B5 produces 247 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. On the B5, FWD is standard, but buyers can upgrade to AWD. The B5 achieves 25 MPG in the city and 35 on the highway.

For consumers looking for more power, they can upgrade to the T8. Volvo discontinues the mid-level T6 for the 2022 model year. The base T8 eAWD produces 405 horsepower and 472 lb-ft of torque. Select the "Polestar Engineered" variant, and power peaks at an incredible 455 horsepower and 523 lb-ft of torque. The T8 variants utilize a 9.2 kWh battery and electric motor that works in conjunction with the turbo 4-cylinder engine. The T8 achieves 30 MPG in a combination of highway and city driving, and with the tap of a button on the screen, the car can go up to 22 miles on pure-electric driving before the engine seamlessly kicks back on.

Performance That Impresses

The 2022 Volvo S60 is an impressive performer in all applications. While the base B5 is not a world-class performer, it is no slouch, with a 0-60 time of 6.4 seconds. Those upgrading to the 405 horsepower variant can achieve 60 in just 5.5 seconds. The enthusiast "Polestar-Engineered" variant hits 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. All iterations of the 2022 S60 perform admirably in cornering. The Ohlins chassis components in the Polestar variants certainly increase driving pleasure, though they can feel rough on some freeways. Stopping power is excellent with the Polestars Brembo brakes, bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line. The Performance driving mode results in tight steering and heavy gear-holding.

Luxury Technology And Materials, Standard

The interior of the Volvo S60 is one of the best in its class. The interior fitment is incredible and, most importantly, solid without the typical squeaking that plaque many other premium compact sedans. Genuine leather is now standard in the S60 for the 2022 model year, another feature that makes the S60 stand alone. The seats beautifully contour around the torsos of driver and passenger alike. Select the R-Design package for more aggressive bolstering, while the Inscription package adds massaging seats and extendable thigh support. The steering wheel is of excellent quality with a leather wrap. The cluster and cruise control are on the left, while infotainment controls are on the right. New for 2022 are matte-black buttons, a welcome upgrade given the earlier examples' tendency to smear. Directly in front of the driver is the previously-optional 12-inch display. Excellent graphics are throughout the system, and it can display maps and infotainment information, though that is it for configuration.

The center stack features an extensive tablet-like 9-inch infotainment system running the current Volvo Sensus software. Optimization for the system is excellent, with quick responses and a suite of available apps. Both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but do require a physical phone connection.

Top-Safety Pick

In traditional Volvo fashion, the S60 receives a myriad of safety equipment. The S60 is a 2022 "Top Safety Pick +" by the IIHS because it exceeds all crash-worthiness metrics as well as comes with a host of safety equipment as standard. All trim levels receive standard crash avoidance technology that will either brake the car before a collision or automatically swerve to avoid it entirely. The standard suite of safety features is part of Volvo's "Vision 2020" commitment. The commitment states that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car. Impressively, they are on track to fulfill that commitment and beyond. Volvo is the world-leader in automotive safety, and that will continue to be a significant selling point in their cars.
